Subject: a chosen one, a sent one

I Corinthians 1:1
Paul a called one, a sent one of Christ Jesus through the will of God and Sosthenes the brother

Paul is a called one. In his letters this word is equivalent to the word elect or chosen. See I Corinthians 1:26-31; Galatians 1:15. In Romans 1:6 the word called is used to refer to the called ones of Jesus Christ.

A sent one is an apostle but the word apostle is not a translation. It is better to say a messenger and it is translated like that in Philippians 2:25 and II Corinthians 8:23 in the King James Version. It would be legitimate to say envoy, representative, diplomat or ambassador as well.

The word called can be used to describe a regular noun that goes with it. In that case, here we would have-Paul a chosen messenger. Both things are true. Paul was a chosen one through the will of God and he was a chosen messenger through the will of God. Whatever the case here, on the road to Damascus, Saul of Tarsus was not seeking salvation in Christ nor did he want to be a messenger of Christ. It was through the will of God that Saul of Tarsus was a chosen one and a messenger of Christ.
