Staring at the picture on the hearth, Mona recalled many seasons ago when her father had worked in his blacksmith's workshop...

Martin the Warrior had come to him in a dream, telling him to forge a sword, "for one day, a mighty warrior will weild it." So he had set to work, doing just as Martin had told him.

Then, in the Great Battle, when Cluny the Scourge and his despicable vermin had invaded peaceful Redwall, the simple Blacksmith had fought with the sword, for he had found it was meant for him. Slashing with the mighty weapon, Mona's father had slain many vermin.

One day, he had gone out to fight against a sudden attack, when something had happened that changed his life. And Mona's. "Papa, NO!" she had yelped from the Abbey wall as Cluny aproached from her father's rear. He had slain her father with one flick of his dagger, Mona had watched it all happen in horror. She could not have gotten down fast enough.

She had tried to be strong, but many tears had rolled down her cheeks at her fathers death. Now it was just Mona and her mother in their house, but Mona would always remember her father and how he had fought for Redwall even if it costed him his life. All the strength she needed was sitting in a frame on the hearth, forever smiling at her.
