Lady Styrwyn Horizon, Badger Lady of Salamandastron, had only cried twice in her life. The first was when her husband, Urthvale Arrowshooter, had been killed fighting searats.

This was the second time. Today was supposed to be the day Styr's Dibbun daughter, Xaiayth Airqueen, would start her extensive combat education. She was to have begun learning dagger figthing from Gnoshla Lodestar, the ancient harewife who was best at knife fighting.

However, Xaia refused to pick up the knife. She refused, as a matter of fact, to learn any other form of fighting except a little sling fighting, and her sling she used only to shoot at targets with her friend Cattfire the harebabe.

"What should I do, Gnoshla?" Styr asked. Styr was a spur-of-the-moment beast not given to thinking out strategies in detail. This she usually left to her chief hares.

"Well, Xaia does love to read, but refuses to fight except with a toy sling," Gnoshla stated, "The only badger Lord or Lady in history who liked reading and disliked fighting was Russano the Wise, many years ago. As I recall, Russano was educated as a Dibbun at Redwall Abbey. What about sending Xaia to Redwall?"

Styr nodded, relieved she hadn't had to think out Xaia's future in detail, "Yes, Redwall would work, but what about a heir? I have no other children."

"Well, I have thought of a solution to that too," Gnoshla replied, "Remember the Ice Badger clan in the north, where Urthvale was originally from? There is a badger girl there, the daugther of Urthvale's sister, named Velilah. She would make a good Badger Lady, she loves to fight."

"It's settled then," said Styr, "Tomrrow I will send Xaia and an escort of hares to the care of Abbess Juneberry at Redwall Abbey."

In this way was Xaiayth Airqueen's future decided for her. But what she would do at Redwall was her own choosing....
