"Mama........."

The whisper could have come from the reeds at the side of the road. It could have been the wind in the trees. It could have been the burbling of the River Moss.

But it wasn't.

Xaiayth Airqueen was alone. At least, as alone as the badgerbabe had ever been. The last thing she remembered was her mother, Styrwyn Horizon of Salamandastron, talking to Xaia's escort (a teenage hare named Water-lily Leppus) telling her "The building of red stone. Take Xaia there, and leave her." Then Water-lily had taken Xaia into her arms and said "Come, my child."

Now, the young badger and the hare were all alone in the road in the middle of the forest. Xaia didn't know where they were, and Water-lily wasn't telling her. "To the building of red stone, Xaia, like your mother said," was all Water-lily replied.

Now rain came, and Water-lily sheltered Xaia with her cloak. But the cloak was thin, and Xaia was soon soaked. Water-lily had with her Xaia's favorite book and her sling, all that she'd been allowed to take.

"Why did they abandon me?" Xaia thought. Faces from her childhood.....Mother, Gnoshla, Cattfire--oh, Cattfire Lorylepus, her best friend! Why would Catt abandon her?

A building loomed up out of the driving rain. Dully, Xaia wondered if it was the "Red Stone Building" that Water-lily informed her was to be her future.....

Would it be a future alone?
