Forward:
I am Brockrose Redstripe, daughter of Brockstone Redstripe, my father, and Livelyn (live-EH-lin) Coalfur. We are badgers. My father and I have one reddish stripe down our nose, very much like the famous Sunflash the Mace's yellow stripe.
My family and I lived in Mossflower, until my father felt that urge to travel to Salamandastron. He didn't want to put Mother and me in danger, so we stayed home. Father said he would come back to visit and take us with him when he was assured of the safety of the trip to Salamandastron.
Mother stayed at our house to keep it clean and neat for Father's return. She sent me to Redwall so I could learn to be a peaceful creature. I was always play-fighting with my sword, because my father had begun to teach me how to use it before he left. Mother didn't approve of this, and sent me to Redwall. So here I am now. At least I have the sword, as well as Father’s promise that one day he’ll come back to get me and bring me back with him.

1st day, Spring of the Rosy Sunsets-
It's happened! My father, Lord Brockstone Redstripe of Brockhall has been sighted in Mossflower, traveling toward Redwall Abbey with my mother, Lady Livelyn Coalfur. They will be here tomorrow! I've always dreamed of this day when we would all go to Salamandastron together! I will miss DAB and Redwall dearly, but I will be with my family again...
2nd Day, SotRS-
Father's here! Oh, he looked so familiar, and it seems like ages since I last saw him. He said he will stay here for a full season before traveling back to Salamandastron. I have to go now; Father is in Cavern Hole, about to tell his story, and I wouldn't miss it for anything!
3rd Day, SotRS-
Wow, Father's story last night was amazing! I can't wait to see Salamandastron! And guess what? He is going to give me daily sword-lessons and fencing practice. I am going to ask him what I will be bringing with me to Salamandastron, so I can start gathering up my things. Oops, better hurry, for my lesson starts quite soon!
4th Day, SotRS-
Strange thing Father did yesterday. When I asked him what I was going to be bringing, he just smiled and patted my head. "Patience, patience, I’m not leaving for another season." He said, then told me not to worry about it and that we needed to get back to fencing practice.
20th Day, SotRS-
What a whirlwind my life has been, with fencing and bath escapes and DAB raids that I want to remember forever, for they will soon be my last here at Redwall. Funny, though, that Father still has not answered my question...
45th Day, SotRS-
Still nothing from Father...
57th Day, SotRS-
Nothing, nothing...It's as if he is hiding something...
87th Day, SotRS-
It's unnerving that he won't tell me anything! The season will be over in three days!!! I've made up my mind that I am going to talk to him tonight, and find out what is going on...
Last Day, SotRS-
I can't believe this happened! Why...after all of my dreams and hopes...crushed...
Tonight Father called me to him and said he had something very important to tell me. "Brockrose, daughter, I have had to make a hard decision. Now listen and hear me out, or you won't understand"
"Your mother and I have come to an understanding that you have been brought up well here at the Abbey. You have many wonderful friends and a safe and secure sanctuary to live. We think that it may not be so at Salamandastron, and the seas haven't yet been rid of all of the Searats and Corsairs swarming it.
No, no, this can't happen...
Tears welled in my eyes and I looked away as he continued, "We have decided to leave you here for the time being, to finish growing up and live peacefully until you are ready to join us."
Though I knew it was coming, the words dropped like a stone in my heart. I turned to run away as tears flowed freely down my face, but Father's grip tightened and I couldn't get away.
"Look at me." I did. "I am doing this for the best. You will understand la..."
"No, wait!" I said, my words broken by sobs. “I have waited, hoped, and dreamed of the moment we could be family again. You come back, and those hopes rose. Now they are gone, and I have nothing to look forward to any more. Nothing. Now you’re taking Mama away, too. And I get left behind here like some abandoned child of runaways." My voice held a strong bitterness in it, but I didn't care.
All this for nothing. Nothing at all anymore but a split family again.
"Look. I am not trying to hurt you. I will make allowance for your last statement because of your situation, though it was uncalled for. I will not, however, endanger your life out there, when you can be perfectly fine here at Redwall. And you do have something to look forward to. I will visit, as often as possible, here with your mother. When I decide that you are old enough, mature enough, and ready, I will come one last time. That is the time I will take you with me."
"Now," he said as he lifted my chin, "I leave tomorrow, so I want one last sword lesson with you. Go dry your face and wipe up those tears so you can concentrate. Go."
I went upstairs to wash up.
1st Day, Summer of the Bright Moon-
Those last sword lessons were really special. And I no longer have a heavy heart. When I said goodbye as Father and Mother left through the gates, tears ran down my face, but they weren't bitter, or wholly sad. I now have an understanding that what Father did was best for me. I have something to look forward to, and I can still grow up with my Redwall friends. As I saw the dust rise in their wake on the path, I pictured myself walking in that place, paw in paw with Father and with the proud realization that he has found me fit and mature enough for the journey.
I just have to wait a little longer...
