Most beasts have heard of Rab Streambattle. He is an important leader of the South Streambattle Holt. But not everybody knows about the North Streambattle Holt. This is where you will.
The otters of North Streambattle are distantly related to those in South Streambattle. The two holts were split a very long time ago. At one point the entire Streambattle family lived together by the mouth of a river near Salamandastron. They followed the leadership of two brothers. One day searats attacked their home. About half of the tribe followed Lew, the elder brother to safety, but many of the warriors stayed behind with Sammin, hoping to defend the holt. The rats killed several otters before the fight was over. Sammin decided to allow his brave warriors to sleep and eat, and in the morning they would search for his brother. When they started searching, it was obvious that Lew had led their holt down the river, inland. Sammin and his warriors followed the trail all day, and long after dark, suspecting that Lew would have set up a camp down river. But Lew had turned away from the river, and Sammin missed it in the dark. Even by day, Sammin's otters would have been hard put to find the trail, for Lew was taking no chances about vermin following them, and had hidden their tracks. Sammin kept his warriors going for weeks. They rested now at night, hoping they would not miss the trail in the dark, and not realizing they had missed it already. Finally, Sammin's wife Lexa told him they'd had enough. They were not going to find Lew before winter, and without a holt, they would freeze or starve. So the otters continued up river, but now they were looing for a good spot for a new holt. They found a spot in the river where a large pool formed, and a cave opened onto it. They enlarged the cave, and settled down for the winter, building boats, fishing in the river, telling stories, and remembering those Lew lead to safety. To honour those who had been lost in the stream during the fight, they called themselves Streambattle
Many seasons passed. Sammin and Lexa had three kitts; Saithe, Jav, and Denna. One day when Jav was exploring he found a giant red castle in the woods. Sammin followed him back to Redwall, and found friends inside the stone walls. Soon the Streambattles and the Redwallers were visiting and sharing what they had. It was at Redwall that Jav met Seana, a pretty ottermaid with a lovely singing voice. They were married and lived at the holt, but their children; Dolin, Bail, Tessa, and Rex, spent a lot of their dibbunhood at the abbey.
When Dolin became leader of the holt, something unusaul happened. Seaotters from the coast came boating up the stream. They were inviting every otter they saw to a Hulaballoo, a big otter party by the sea, in four seasons. On that boat was Kalena, who loved life in the river holt so much that she stayed. Dolin fell in love with her and they were married three seasons later. They took some of the holt, and spent their honeymoon at the Hulaballoo. To Dolin's surprise, there were other Streambattles there. From talking to them, he discovered that they were cousins of his, descended from Lew. Old Lew was still alive, but he had long ago given up hope that any of those who had stayed to fight had survived. Lew had turned out of the stream on the first night. He kept the holt moving for several days, and then decided it was safe to return home. When they arrived, no one was in sight. There were no bodies left, though it looked as though some had been dragged into the sea, and taken by the tide. Assuming his brother had been taken as a slave, Lew led the otters south, to find a new place away from those memories. They too had taken the name of Streambattle in honour of that night. For their flight up the stream, and the battle their loved ones had fought. It was an incredible coincidence.
So Dolin brought back the news of their cousins, and every eight seasons afterwards, the entire holt went to the Hulabaloo to see their cousins. The North Streambattles, as they were now known, helped Redwall through it's troubles with vermin. In fact, most otters near Redwall have some Streambattle blood, and are warriors to the core. Today, Kanya Streambattle is leader of the Holt. She never married, but her younger brother Bran did. Bran's son Rild has four children; Denn, AEsh, Carby, and Saythe. He and his wife, Kina, took them to the Abbey to play, and now Saythe takes her neices and nephews, as well as her cousin's kitts to Redwall to play. She is an active member of DAB, and has recently become an Expert Dibbun. Saythe, named after Saithe, Jav's sister, has adopted her mother's family's warcry, "WHUPPERYHOO!" She has made many friends at DAB, and hopes to make more. The legacy of the Streambattles lives on.
