Kalista's father was a wildkat warlord. Riko loved nothing more than bloodshed. He was different from most though. He wouldn't allow vermin in his lands anymore than he would good creatures. Only the Wildkats of Arrath were good enough to live. Those, and the birds and fish they hunted.
Fortuna, Kal's mother, was the opposite. A healer and fire maje by trade, she married Riko because he lied to her. He was like a fruit rotting from the inside out. Still looked good, but inside was foul and evil. He never showed this side of himself untill he was married, and had Fortuna wraped around his paw.
When Fortuna fell pregnant, Riko was pleased. He would have a son to rule the world when Riko passed into the next world. However, the birth of beautiful baby Kalista changed that. Riko didn't have any use for a daughter.
When Kalista was bout two seasons, Riko began to lose his temper with her frequently. She was smaller than most wildkats, even the other females. She was also very shy and fearful. Riko gave Kalista many scars for about two more seasons. This was the beginnig of Kalista's teachings. She learned to speak properly very quickly, and when not to say a word. She never lied, or put a paw out of place, for fear of her fathers wrath. This made her more advanced than other creatures her age.
Life wasn't all claws and fears. Fortuna used to sing to the infant, and when Riko was out hunting, Fortuna taught Kalista how to read, write and draw. Kalista took to these very quickly. Then Fortuna taught her how to use the fire majic passed down from her ancestors. Healing, lighting fires and candles, and other useful things. Fortuna never showed her daughter how to use her majic for fighting.
Kalista was about six seasons old when the vermin army invaded, along with other creatures that wanted to rid the land of the monster that hunted them when they padded onto the land their ancestors once lived. Fortuna tried to take her daughter, and escape the claws of Riko forever, but the evil tyrant stopped them. He killed Fortuna in fron of the kitten, and turned his blade to Kalista. "I have no use for a little menace like you," He snareled. Kalista ran to the wall, with Riko close behind. He picked up the squealing kitten, digging his claws cruely into her back. Three rivers of blood ran down her back, and onto the wall, and the creatures on the other side. A squirrel looked up when a few drops hit his paw. Notching an arrow into his bow, he took aim, careful to not hit the little girl. The arrow sailed from his bow into the black heart of Riko Blackclawz. As he fell to the walkway of hte wall, he looked at the trembling and bleeding Kalista still in his paw. "This is all your fault. You killed your parents," he hissed. He flung her towards the ground. She was lucky to land in the basket of an old wiserat.
Muslina took pity on the poor creature, unconcious and bleeding from three deep scratches on her back. Her husband, and warrior rat named Bloodpaw told her to kill the kitten, until he looked at her face. Kalsita was scarred under her right eye, but the shape was like it was made deliberately. "He marked his own fleash and blood with his own claw. She must've dun summin really bad." He remrked roughly. But it was the fact that she was so pretty he decided to let Muslina care for the child.
Kalista soon woke, and accepted the rat's care. She never spoke, and constanly looked over her sholders. Riko still tormented her with his last words.
She was out with Muslina, learning about curing plants when the wild squirrel and otter tribe attacked. "Death to all Vermin!" Was the war cry. Kalista found her voice then, remembering the squirrel that had shot her father. She screamed, and pelted along the path, Muslina right behind her. A squirrel blade made it's way deep into her chest. Kalista turned to see her foster mother fall. "Run child," the old wiserat gasped. Kalista obeyed, and ran like the wind, her light build making her faster than the heavy otters. She hid herself in an old cave, whimpering and sobbing, sick with exhaustion and fear. The mark her father had given her seemed to be working differently than how he anticipated.
Somehow, Kalista fell asleep, and was found by an old Fox. He picked up the kitten and walked through the forest, towards a place he knew she would recieve proper care. He knew nothing about kittens. Kalista woke up to the soft voice of the fox talking to Father Abbot of Redwall Abbey. "I would take her, but she needs a mother I think. My Vixin passed to Dark Forest several Seasons ago, so The cat will be better here." Noticing Kalista watching him, the fox scooped her up, nad placed a foxy kiss on her paw. "Farewell friend, you were wonderful company." With that, he handed Kalista into the waiting arms of Father Abbot, and turned away, following the path away from The Abbey. Father Abbot looked at Kalista's face. "What is your name Dibbun?" In a voice soft as down, and sweet as dripping honey, the little wildkat kitten answered. "Kalista Fortuna."
And That is how Kalista became a Redwall Dibbun.
