Gonffen is a direct descendent of Gonff the 1st, who was a good friend of Martin the Warrior. He was born in a small village that was north of Redwall. His parents, after having the little mouse, noticed how he sometimes tried to steal food from the kitchen when he thought they weren't looking. They soon realized that Gonffen was becoming a real thief like Gonff the 1st. The parents were already having a lot of trouble getting their neighbors to trust them, since everybody knew who their ancestor was. They became afraid that they would be banished from their village due to their son's thieving nature. Immediately, the parents tried to force Gonffen's thieving instincts out of his mind. At times they were a little too cruel to their son. One night, Gonffen was walking around the town after his bed time. He enjoyed taking nighttime strolls through the streets. Suddenly, he noticed a large light coming from near his house. He ran to see what was going on and found his house on fire. Mice were running everywhere, trying to put it out. Once the fire was out, Gonffen walked into the ruins. His eyes widened as he saw the burnt skeletons of his parents. He didn't care that much for his parents, but the surprise of what had happened to them kept the mouse standing there for a few moments. Suddenly, a mob of angry mice came and attacked him. They knew that nothing could stop the mouse from thieving now. They quickly tied him up and threw him in a cage. For a month, he was trapped in the cage and food was given to him through the bars. Gonffen began to think of an escape when he couldn't stand it any longer. Nobody is sure how he did it, but he managed to escape and not leave any tracks. The little mouse looked back at the town from a distance and vowed that he would become as great of a thief as Gonff the 1st. Gonffen went away from the town and began looking for a new place to live. During his travels, he had many dangerous experiences that helped him learn the ways of a thief. He outwitted foxes, escaped a group of cannibal lizards in a swamp, and managed to steal a barrel load of honey from the biggest swarm of bees in Mossflower. One day, he stumbled upon Redwall Abbey. He observed it for a few days before deciding that this was an excellent place to live. He knocked on the large gates, hoping someone would hear him. The door slowly creaked inwards. Gonffen was greeted by the redwallers and was allowed to live there for as long as he wanted. He accepted this offer and was immediately taken to the great hall where he ate more than he could possibly have imagined. He sighed as he went up to bed that day. He knew he would enjoy life at the abbey.
