To begin with, Rook was born. Her parents expected twins but what they got instead was a very large baby girl sea otter with a silver-white tail. Poor parents.
Like most otters Rook was swimming before she could walk. One day she escaped from her grandmother and headed out to sea in a little boat her brother made for her. No one noticed she was gone until three days later when the boat washed up on the shore outside the caves the holt was living in at the time. Then everyone ran around looking for her yelling,"ROOK! ROOOOOOOOOK! WHERE ARE YOU?!"
Rook had spent the three days with a tribe of seals on an ice floe and had a lot of fun, but when the seals heard Rook's parents calling her they all slid into the water and disappeared.
The seals swam all the way back to Rook's parents and told them to please come and get her. Then they followed the boat back to the ice and told Rook (who had picked up on their language pretty quick) to stay with her family and not go off and get lost again.
Rook went home with her parents and never got lost again.
Instead, she made very detailed charts of the coastline, and made sure to always bring some charcoal and parchment with her if she was going to be exploring someplace she hadnt been before. It was on one of these expeditions that she located an even larger and more spacious system of caves on the northwestern coast. Ther were some rats and foxes living there, but Rook's holt chased them out and moved in.
One summer day, when Rook had gotten to be as tall as her mother and as strong as her father, she decided to travel south. She packed her haversack and snuck out of the house, carefully avoiding her parents who were attempting to civilize her (baths, dresses, early bedtime, etc).
After several days of travel, Rook came across the River Moss and followed it inland. Eventually, it crossed a path, which Rook followed south to Redwall Abbey. She introduced herself as Rook Icerudder, and joined a club for dibbuns called DAB. Her parents probably haven't noticed that she's gone yet.
