My mum, Sita, an' me dad, Torran, left me in a pine copse in th' Northlands, where they knew I would be safe from Tian Stoneheart, th' wildcat warlord they was fleein'. A coupla days after Moonshadow, th' white-furred Lord of Wolves, an' 'is fierce-eyed mate, Iceblink, found me. I lived wid them fer three seasons, learnin' 'ow to fight, heal, an' live off th' land. That winter Iceblink 'ad three pups, two males an' a girl. One male was stillborn an' the other was real weak. 'E soon perished o' a illness called Frostfen Chills. Moonshadow,knew I would suffer th' same fate if'n I didn' git someplace warm.
A passin' kestrel once tol' im' 'bout Redwall, so me an' 'im headed there. Soon as we reached River Moss, th' two o' us ran 'cross a horde of vermin, twoscore of weasels an' pine matrens, led by a one-eyed ermine who was layin' out plans to capture Redwall! A weasel scout spotted us an' a battle raged, fer Moonshadow was a warrior born. Armed on'y wid a sling an' a blunt dagger, I 'elped fight. All th' villins were slain, but Moonshadow was fatally wounded. 'E died that night an' I buried 'im on th' east side o'River Moss. Next evenin' I found Redwall, opened th' gate (the bolts were rusty) an' spent th' night in th' gatehouse. A ottermaid found me next morn an the elders, after 'alf a day o' decidin', brought me ta DAB.
