PX a major hindrance to tourism, says Abel
By ANDREW ALPHONSE
THE national flag carrier Air Niugini is a major impediment to tourism development in the country, Minister for Culture and Tourism Charles Abel said.
Mr Abel said this in Tari last Friday during the launch of the Tari basin tourism development strategy plan.
He said tourism in PNG had a potential to bring in huge revenue for the economy but some factors hindered its growth.
“One of these impediments is Air Niugini and the kind of services it provides,” he said.
Mr Abel said Air Niugini enjoyed a monopoly but posed a problem for the travelling public and tourists, especially due to rising air fares, flight cancellations and delays.
He said there was a need for the Government to allow competition with other airliners so that services could improve.
Mr Abel said rising fuel prices, poor infrastructure like roads, airports and wharves, bad publicity and law and order problems were also hampering tourism in the country.
He urged the people of the Hela region to preserve their unique culture, including the famous Huli wigmen dance that had become an icon for tourism promotion.
Mr Abel said the land in Tari and Hela was filled with oil, gas and other minerals but they were non-renewable and would one day run out while tourism, if properly developed, would sustain the economy for a long time.
Mr Abel also presented K30,000 from the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) to Hela Tourism Promotion and Development Authority.
Tari-Pori MP James Marabe and his joint district budget priority and planning committee allocated K50,000 to support tourism programmes in Tari and Hela.
Southern Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru promised another K50,000 to support the work of the PNGTPA in Tari and Hela.
