Larsen, i totally agree with you on economic planning. A nation, province, individual or a group without vision will always dissipitate or perish.

What Enga province needs now is to provide opportunity for the people to generate cash from whereever they are. People dont have to migrate to cities and towns to look for money. If money generating economic activities are on their land, i dont think the people would be migrating to cities and towns of the country to survive of bettel-nut money. What Enga province needs now is to test certain aspects of cash generating agriculture activites, which would be sustained for a life time. The Porgera mine will shortly come to a close when all the ore is mined. What next after that?

Yes school subsidies are paid, etc. But a wise man once said, "dont feed someone with fish all the time, teach him how to catch fish and he will be satisfied for a lifetime". Moral of this saying still stands out. If the province has to move forward, the provincial government has to look for ways to encourage the people into cash crop production, carrying our studies, researches, that would be geared towards finding suitable cash crops that can be produced throughout the province. This would then encourage people to work the land, hence earn cash in return. Provide markets for such products and encourage a fluid cash market in the village. I have seen provinces like ENB change within few years. People have become well off and they have resorted to the land. Cash is readily available, when they work the land.

Economic planning in the province should start from such a program where most of the population can benefit and dont migrate to cities to sweat their guts out selling bettelnut. Engans selling bettelnut in cities, sweating it out, trying to make a living, living in the settlement with no water, no toilet, becomes a sad story. Enga has very furtile land, nice flowing rivers, fresh air and clean environment, but people have to give-up that to seek cash in the cities and towns of PNG. The provincial government should do something about this.
