MAF back in Mendi after 8 years
By ANDREW ALPHONSE
THIRD level airliner, the Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF), is returning to Mendi, Southern Highlands province, after nearly eight years of absence.
This follows the presentation of K100,000 by the provincial government to MAF for the rehabilitation of their rundown Mendi terminal.
Francis Tame from Governor Anderson Agiru’s office made the presentation of the cheque at the MAF head office at the Kagamuga airport in Mt Hagen yesterday.
Mr Tame said the provincial government, under Governor Agiru’s leadership, was keen to restore basic services in the province and create a conducive environment for businesses.
He said the provincial government appreciated and acknowledged the enormous contribution the MAF had made in serving people in most rugged and remote places in the province.
Mr Tame said they had decided to assist the airline to rehabilitate its Mendi terminal.
The provincial government also presented K300,000 to the department of works in Mendi last week for the completion of a high-steel fence for the Mendi airport.
MAF ground operations manager Kos Umion said the Southern Highlands provincial government was the second in the country besides Western province to support the MAF operations to serve rural people.
Mr Umion said there had been much pressure from churches and the people to reopen the Mendi base after its closure in 2001 due to security reasons.
The MAF, together with other civil services, pulled out of Mendi after the township was under siege, following a bloody tribal warfare and the 2002 election-related violence that affected businesses and government services in Mendi.
Mr Umion said that during their absence the terminal shed was vandalised, prompting them to seek Mr Agiru’s assistance to renovate the place.
