Ex-academic charged with rape and murder
By PETER MIVA
A FORMER academic, political aspirant, and businessman, has been charged and remanded in custody at the Buimo jail, Lae, over the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl.
The girl is of Simbu and Enga descent. The incident allegedly happened in 2004 in Lae.
Andrew Lakau, 50, from Teremanda in Wabag, Enga province, was charged last week and appeared before magistrate Sasa Inkung at the Lae District Court for mention last Friday.
He was denied bail and his case was adjourned to Feb 27.
His lawyer Gibson Anis of Yayabu Lawyers appealed to the National Court for Lakau to be allowed bail, citing medical reasons.
The bail application was heard yesterday and a decision will be handed down on Friday.
Police alleged that the suspect sexually penetrated the young girl on two separate occasions in early 2004.
Police alleged she was picked up from the Lae rugby league premises through an arrangement with an elderly woman and taken to the Miok Guest House at China Town, Lae.
It was alleged that days later, the girl was again picked up at the same spot by Dr Lakau and taken to the same guest house, where she was sexually assaulted.
Police said the girl sustained injuries during the second encounter.
The suspect, upon realising that the girl was bleeding heavily, allegedly gave some money to her and took her to Mt Hagen for medical treatment. She died some days later.
The suspect allegedly paid compensation to people claiming to be her relatives after both parties decided to settle the matter out of court.
Police alleged that the mother did not know anything about this until someone showd her a letter of her daughter’s death and compensation payment.
The grieving mother then reported the matter to police.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged last week.
