I hope there are no tensions on campus after the accident involving a pregnant woman from Tari and the retaliated murder of an Engan student. Students need to practice humility, care and responsibility when driving. My sympathies go out to the Tari woman and diseased driver, and their families.

Pregnant woman killed
A PREGNANT woman was killed outside her relative’s home at Gerehu in Port Moresby on Friday when a vehicle driven by a final year law student at the University of Papua New Guinea collided with her.
Police confirmed yesterday the student driver was then bashed to death only 20 metres away from where the pregnant mother lay dead.
Police also identified the two other occupants in the car as the dead student’s colleague, a second year law student and a relative, all from Wabag.
The dead woman was from Tari, Southern Highlands Province.
One eyewitness described the accident as a “totally horrific” happening.
The accident happened at Obuta Crescent in Gerehu Stage Two between 6.30pm and 7pm last Friday.
The eyewitness, who hesitated at times in describing the whole scenario, gave an account of what he claimed to have seen before, during and after the crash.
He said it all started from Tauriganiniga Drive 200 metres away from where the deaths occurred.
The eyewitness said he remembered holding onto his two children’s hands near a power pole at the entrance of Obuta Cres when he saw the vehicle travelling down the road from Unaba Street in the satellite suburb.
“All the people walking along the street saw the vehicle coming,’’ he said.
The eyewitness, a driver himself, said the vehicle appeared to have been travelling at between 60 to 70 kilometres an hour.
The eyewitness said the driver may have been upset after the teenager was killed.
He said the car kept travelling along the road, and that people nearby were getting out of its path as the vehicle turned into Obuta Cres and collided with the pregnant woman.
The eyewitness, whose younger brother was the third victim, said he saw the pregnant woman being thrown into the air and falling almost 25 metres away from where she had been sitting.
The witness claimed the pregnant woman had been seen earlier, chatting with neighbours.
She was eight months pregnant, the eyewitness said.
The woman had only arrived a week ago in Port Moresby from Tari to await the birth of her baby when the accident happened.
He said the occupants of the vehicle came out of the car and while one student and his friend dashed for their life, the final year student was unable to escape and was bashed to death.
Police investigations into the tragic accident are continuing.
