A police spokeswoman said the artist was dropping his son off in the suburb of Rosettenville on Thursday evening when he was attacked by armed robbers. His son was already out of the car when he saw what happened, and then ran for help, Capt Cheryl Engelbrecht added. One of South Africa's most popular artists, Lucky Dube toured the world singing about social problems. Lucky Dube began his career by singing mbaqanga (traditional Zulu) music and recorded his first album with the Super Soul band in 1982. He later moved into reggae, producing Rastas Never Die and Think About The Children in 1984. His albums, Slave, Prisoner and Together As One saw him gain first national and then global recognition. For me and Enga we have a lot of important things to worry about. For instance the lack of medicine in remote Enga, tribal fights, corruption in the provincial government, deteriorating facilities, roads, brides, increasing HIV Aids in Enga, and the list goes on. Thats why this forum should be reserved for issues relevant to Enga. intellectuals like you and me should come here to discuss and learn from each other about these issues and suggest ways to improve our Enga. Diyamo Na, a 26-year-old housewife from Neauk village in Maramuni, was evacuated to Mt Hagen by Mission Aviationary Fellowship after her husband allegedly chopped her arm over a feud at the remote district six weeks ago. She said from her hospital bed that her husband had killed a pig her sister had given her. When she tried to ask why he had done that, the man grabbed his bush knife and struck at her, she claimed. Doctors who operated on her said only a small part of the skin had clung to the hand. But they said they could not preserve the hand as it was already infected, leaving them with no option but to part of the arm to save her. Due to the remoteness of her village and high cost of airline fares, it took her relatives two weeks to come up with the required amount to fly her to Mt Hagen. Maramuni is on the fringes of Porgera in Enga, Madang and East Sepik provinces and is only accessible by air. MAF runs a weekly flight to the isolated area. The mother-of-three said her husband could not be arrested to face charges as there are no police there. The health workers say when the nation is experiencing a rise in domestic violence, police are doing little to pursue such cases. “We have dealt with many such cases and compiled medical reports but police hardly ever make arrests,” a doctor said. They said a child received severe abdomen injuries last week when two women fought over a man. Also a small boy from Nebilyer lost his hand when his step mother attacked him when trying to fight his mother. “The frustrating thing is his father didn’t want to pursue the case which should have seen his wife ending up in jail,” the doctor said. They supported Dr John Warai of Lufa who said that domestic violence was rife in the rural areas and that only stiffer penalties would deter such crimes.
