PORT MORESBY: Police in Papua New Guinea have stepped up security around Prime Minister Michael Somare after rumours of an assassination plot against him.

Police Commissioner Gari Baki said police intelligence indicated the reported threats against Sir Michael and other senior leaders were somehow linked to plans for a protest march on parliament today.

The march to call for Sir Michael to step down was cancelled after senior police officers talked to organisers, he said.

“On the rumoured assassination attempts, whilst we think these are just rumours, we are taking them seriously and taking every necessary precaution.

“Our police and defence intelligence are working closely and monitoring the situation,” Mr Baki said.

“Why do we have to go to the extent of imposing threats on our political leaders' lives?

“It's uncalled for, it's unheard of in Papua New Guinea anyway, that we adopt those kinds of principles of terror operations.”

Two leaders behind the aborted march told reporters they only wanted their grievances heard and did not plan to burn parliament or create chaos.

Steven Andambo of the PNG Millennium Good Governance and Noel Anjo of the PNG National Awareness Front said they agreed to cancel the march out of respect for the parliament's budget session.

Heavy rain in Port Moresby and their failure to collect 50,000 signatures for their petitions were other reasons for cancelling.

But the pair said they intended to hold a march and petition the Prime Minister to step down at next year's first session of parliament.

Opposition Leader Mekere Morauta said his group did not advocate any form of mob rule or street protests.

The floor of parliament was the appropriate forum to raise concerns but any attempt by police to gag freedom of expression would be deemed unconstitutional, he said.

Sir Michael's National Alliance party emerged triumphant in July elections and easily put together a coalition Government made up of 87 of the 109-member parliament.

But some of the Government's recent decisions have rankled with ordinary Papua New Guineans.

They include a threat to remove the operating licence of popular new mobile phone provider Digicel, which is challenging the monopoly of PNG Telikom.

Anjo said other issues of concern were massive hikes in MPs' salaries and payments to former prime ministers and chief justices and the removal of powers from the Ombudsman Commission.
