In reply to: Engan Lenge 's message, "PUBLIC SERVANTS' REVOLUTION ON SALARY INCREASE" on Thu, May 03 2007, 12:10:44am

At last we have someone speaking now. This idea sounds great to me. Instead of being genuine and undergoing the financial and mental agony of surviving due to a pay-packet small enough for (at most) a week, I think like you (Engan Lenge) say, the timing is right if we all stand up and set this condition with any political party vying to win seats in Enga, for a salary increase.

I can never agree more with you here, for a "Salary Increase" for the ordinary and hard-working citizens, who have, time and again, suffered mentally by the sound of "salary increases for politicians" every now and then.

Whilst on that note, there is one factor to consider. This call (or conditional demand) is an advantage to the ordinary citizens for now (and perhaps for a long while if an agreement is signed, and if the party gets into power). If a salary increase is considered we should also understand that we would be depriving long term tangible infrastructural developments which can inevitably mean a lot, coupled with more money in the pocket. A salary increase alone will never help in terms of infrastructural development and service delivery. And salary increase alone will never make any better sense when you don't have these developments in place.

I understand the timing now may pose a desirable opportunity for an increase (which is good- and you have my vote for that), but lets not be so into it, thus cheating or depriving ourselves from seeing real development in our electorates.

A conditional demand for both development and Gradual salary increase would be ideal.

The ripe is for that now. The suggestion is a great idea.
My take on this.

1. Salary increase should be for both the PUBLIC and PRIVATE sector.
The plantation labourers, security guards, nurses, teachers, the overworked workers in the fishery sector and logging industries.
All of these workers and every other industry deserve an increase in their pay check. This increase can be executed in installments over the 5 year period.

2. The Party that has the PAY INCREASE POLICY has to compliment this policy with a parallel policy on Political Reform. This Reform should remove the politicians' hands from the public service machinery, state entities and the private sector boards. The Politicians tasks and responsiblities has to be narrowed down to policy making and legislation.
In this way, the public sector, state enterprises and the private sector will be free to carry out their tasks in a hazzle free environment.
