A former Papua New Guinea prime minister says he'll move to repeal a controversial new law legalising casinos and internet gambling, if he is returned to power in June elections.

Earlier this week, parliament passed a new law which allows the building of casinos and will enable online gaming companies to operate in PNG.

But former Prime Minister Sir Mekere Morauta says the new bill will increase gambling-related problems being experienced by families.

He says if his PNG Party forms a coalition government after the June polls, the new law will be repealed.

Anti-casino groups including churches and women's groups are also calling for the removal of the new gaming law.
