Classes resume amid threats

BY PETER PIA
DISPITE several threats issued last week by Wapukin and Ambulin warring tribes into the Highlands Lutheran International School (HLIS) in Enga province, the school resumed classes last Wednesday.
The school board held a meeting last week and agreed for normal classes to continue provided that Wabag-based mobile squad 11 was present to safeguard and contain the situation.
HLIS principal Brent Kilback said his teachers and students, who fled to Kumul Lodge on the border for safety, had returned to the school.
Board member and Gutnius Lutheran agency Bishop David Piso told The National from Wabag last Friday that students were already in class and the school was up and running..
Bishop Piso said despite threats issued by the warring tribes, the board felt that future of the students was of paramount importance while condeming the fight and urged the tribes to stop fighting each other.
“This is a big school in the country. Wapukins and Ambulins must stop their fight and surrender to God for peace and harmony once and for all,” Bishop Piso said.
Bishop Piso also urged the provincial and the national governments to address this issue.
