Subject: OC’s governance role important - Karpa Yarka Author: Cool_Guy1 [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: Tue, Nov 28 2006, 03:40:09pm OC’s governance role important I HAVE been a critic of the Ombudsman Commission over its powers and functions but over time, I have to come to realise the important role it plays in ensuring good governance and the need to give it more powers. I therefore do not think it was in the best interest of the country to amend the Ombudsman Commission Act on Nov 8. Prior to the vote, I informed Parliament that I would not support the Bill. However, the Deputy Speaker informed that since my PAP supported the Bill, it was mandatory that I supported it too. I could not vote against the Bill knowing the consequences as stipulated under the Integrity of Political Parties nor abstain as the doors where shut. I had no choice but to unwillingly support the Bill. I want the people of PNG to know that in future I will fervently fight for greater powers to be given to the Ombudsman Commission to carry out its constitutional role as the legitimate leadership watchdog in the country.
