I'm having some trouble with my hens and I was hoping someone could help me solve a riddle. A few weeks ago I went on a short trip. I had family feed my four hens & one rooster while I was gone. Before leaving, I had received 2-4 eggs daily, but when I came home I learned my chickens had laid a total of 0 eggs during my trip. We thought maybe it was due to separation anxiety (if chickens experience that), so I spent time with the hens the night I got home. No eggs the next morning. I've been back a couple weeks now, and have spent 'quality' time with my chickens every day since my return. Unfortunately, they are just now beginning to lay eggs again. I've received under 8 eggs in 2weeks. Also, the eggs they gave me before the trip were clean, beautiful, and perfect light brown eggs. But the eggs they've laid after my return have been covered in some sort of filth. It appears there is yoke and albumen on the _outside_ of the eggs, covering sections of the shell. There are no cracks, however. I've examined the inside of their chicken coop, and where they normally lay eggs, there is now large wet spots, sometimes slimy. Any idea what this could be? They are fed a healthy diet and fresh water every day. In addition to the egg mystery, one of my barred rocks has started limping. She doesn't appear to have any external wounds. I'm not sure if this could be tied into her strange egg laying behaviour. Please, any help from chicken owners is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
