I got one of those indoor/outdoor thermometer with the humidity reading for indoor from Walmart for about $15 for this incubation. I put it inside the incubator on the little rack that came with the incubator for its thermometer so the reading was at the top of the eggs. The humidity reading has been 59-60% all the time from day 1 till last night when I heard peeping. I had water in the center trough. Now I have put water in all troughs and have added a glass of water for more humidity (I had done testing before adding eggs to figure out what humidity each trough gave and all weren't enough) I now have the humidity up to 70%.

This is my second attempt at incubation and was told that the humidity was too low last time as I had most of my eggs pipping and only 1/2 made it out with 2 needing my help and 1 of those 2 was deformed. That's why I bought the humidity reader for this time.

I do have a big question, I opened one vent today because of the chicks that hatched and the humidity dropped to 65% so I turned the plug upside down and had it covering 1/2 of the hole and the humidity went up to 69%. It has taken all day to have the first chick dry up enough to take out.

Only 2 chicks have hatched and there is no sign from the rest.

Now here's a bit more information, I had collected the eggs for about a week before I was intending to start the incubation. But had to wait a few more days than that to get the temp and humidity right inside. So these eggs were older than 7 days, could that have accounted for the early hatch? Also the bantam eggs did have a hen set on them for a couple of days and then the lady's son (friend owns the Bantams) collected them and put them in the fridge overnight. Could that be why they hatched today?

Thank you so much for this info. You surely went into wonderful depth. I appreciate that. Also I am thankful you started this to keep out the horribleness that was occurring on the other site. I had gotten disgusted with it and hadn't looked on for several weeks until Regina (snomoon) told me you had started a new one. Congrats, I like this format too. I live in Arkansas and my Yahoo IM id is mbldesigns.

Love ya,
Marion
