There are different types of depression. If you want to sleep all the time and feel very groggy and lethargic and have no interest in anything, that is one type, the other is when you can't sleep and are very hyper-revved up and restless and you want to keep moving and doing to avoid feeling. Usually the second type leads to weightloss whereas the sleepy....hide in bed, I just want to sleep kind leads to weight gain. of course no one is ever completely typical and I am not in any way attempting to give medical advice here. But....if what you are experiencing sounds like the lethargic type there is a natural amino acid you can get from healthfood stores called L-Tyrosine. the capsules usually come in 250 mg. strength....most adults would take 2, two times a day....but NOT after say 3 or 4 PM or you won't sleep well at night. This is a natural amino acid and not a drug. You could try taking 2 in the morning and 2 mid afternoon and see how you feel. For me it felt like the heavy blanket lifting. the circumstances were of course still the same as far as whatever was upsetting in my life, but it just didn't seem overwhelming anymore. If I missed the afternoon dose I would feel like I was "crashing" back into the darkness of despair. If you want to turn your health around and correct the imbalance which is causing the depression, you need to focus on sources of lean protein, whole foods/complex carbs such as raw, non-starchy veggies, whole grains, and unsaturated fats....especially fish oils. You can get the omega three fatty acids from the fish oil in capsules that you swallow if you want. the brain is mainly fatty tissue. The amino acids that cause the uplifting brain chemicals to be produced are found in the lean proteins. But there is an interesting phenonmenom that occurs.....the first thing you eat at a meal determines what amino acids get produced first and which brain chemicals the brain neuro transmitters accept in. It sort of works like a first come first serve basis. So if you fat or refined carbs or starchy carbs first then the brain is going to get those effects first and won't get the mood-boosting effects of the lean protein. If you want to boost your mood or rev your brain for say an exam, you want to eat the lean protein and then a salad with a salad dressing with unsaturated fat like olive or canola oil....or else follow the lean protein with lightly steamed veggies. If you want to get sleepy then eat a bowl of oatmeal or a baked potatoe, or some whole grain toast. If you eat a typical american meal with fatty meat, fat-laden pasta or baked potatoe, and over-cooked 'dead" veggies from a can then you aren't giving your body the nutrients it needs and you are clogging up your whole being with destructive stuff. I believe this is why depression has hit epidemic proportions in the US. The anti-depression drug makers are thrilled (all the way to the bank). meanwhile if we are treating the symptoms and not the cause other ailments and diseases pop up such as heart disease, cancer, etc.

If you illiminate the refined foods and the starchy foods from your diet, and avoid saturated fats you will be giving your body what it needs to recover. You can try taking the tyrosine for immediate relief of the depression. Take a good multi-vitamin as well...one high in B-complex. You will know when you don't need the L-tyrosine anymore when one night you are extreemly wakefull and revved up. Then just keep it around on an as-needed basis. You know that when you excercise you produce endorphines which ellevate mood. So put it all together and you have a total attack plan for the heavy blanket of depression.

One pitfall I got into in the past few years was using caffeine to get me out of that lethargic mood. I even would then take over the counter sleeping pills to help me sleep at night. I was basically doing over-the-counter uppers and downers to function. meanwhile the weight kept piling on. After only 1 month in excercising every day and eating healthy i didn't need or want the caffeine. My bad headaches have pretty much disappeared. I am drinking herbal teas to wind down at night and taking 25 mg. Melatonin supplement to aide sleep at night.

Try making just one or two changes at a time to get started. If you eliminate all the refined foods and excercise every day you will feel soooo much better. You can take the L-tyrosine to help with the depression till you don't need it anymore. Little by little you can change your whole life.

hugs,
Dreemy
