San Jose Sharks Fire Coach Ron Wilson and Hire Mike Keenan

Phoenix (AP) -- Ron Wilson was fired as head coach of the San Jose Sharks after 48 games into the season, a team source told The Associated Press.

Sharks general manager Wilson said Mike Keenan will replace the departed Ron Wilson as interim coach, the source said Saturday, speaking on condition of anonymity. An announcement from the team is expected tommorrow Sunday.

The Sharks lost 6-2 in Phoenix on Saturday night, dropping them to 23-19-6.

Keenan will joined the Sharks in Dallas tomorrow for his first practice as the Sharks head coach.

Prior to this season, Keenan ranked fourth in games coached and victories and first among active coaches.

Keenan was fired as the head coach of the Florida Panthers in November 2003, they finished 24-36-13.

Keenan, 54, led the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup championship in 1994 and took St. Louis to postseason play twice. He also coached in Boston, Vancouver, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Keenan also led Team Canada to two Canada Cup victories and coached the team at the 1980 World Junior Championships and the World Championships in 1993.
