In my opinion they are not really necessary, they are almost like a guitar solo, a song can be without them however the guitar, bass or drum solo`s can create a powerful part of a song even in jazz or metal...
creating a solo is not only creativity and skills, you need to put feeling in it and it is the part in where you can show your capacity as a drummer.
Is not necessary make a very fast drum solo in order to do it awesome.
