Subject: Nonship group... time to get down to the fundamentals

You are the group that gets to remind us why we fell in love with BtVS... You can focus on the whole group, or friendship groupings [I think]... It's your group, and you guys can decide!

ancientpeas
Leatrix
PJzallday
Molloch
VampGirl
Gwynevere1

Some of you have done this before, but there are a few newbies, so members of the group may want to introduce themselves and help out / answers any questions. You may want to determine on how you will decide on your recommendation and have a volunteer coordinate all of the suggestions and send on the final recommendation. The time frame is from Feb 17- Mar 3 for each team to pick the story to represent you and your ship. If you need to consult criteria or rules, visit the website at:

http://www.katlurkin.com/fanfic/index.html

Have fun, ‘cause this is what it is all about!

While I'm not new to fanfiction, I am new to the Club so I could use some help getting started.

Are we each supposed to recommend to the group fics that we've already read? Or suggest new ones? (I haven't read much 'shipless fiction --- mainly because in my experience it's not easy to find.)

Individuals recommend to the nonship group. Then the group reads them and chooses one to recommend to the entire club.

We then go through all of the recommendation, reading and reviewing.

You could try FanFic.com look for BtVS and search foryou may be familiar with. allaboutspike.com has some too. Or search for "friendship between ?/?"

Hi! First of all, there's my e-mail address.
OK, how exactly does this work? Do we send suggestions to everyone else in our group? How do we get each other's e-mail? Just wait for the others to post? How many stories do we each send? What stories has the non-ship group discussesd before? I don't want to repeat. I say that "Anywhere But Here" by Sarah T. was chosen before. Could one of the longer members please help? Thanks.

Just stopping in to check in...

My email is above. I'll start scouring the web for some fic. If I find any, I guess my questions are the same as Gwynevere1 - do I send it email to everyone or post a link here in this thread?

Hi

To answer your questions, how it usually works is that you recommend a story to the non-ship thread. The group (non-shippers) then decide which of the stories recommended, is the best choice for the group to put forward for voting by the club.

At this point, all members of the club read the recommendation and critique/comment on the story and give it a score (this is out of 100). At the end of the reading period the scores are tallied and the winners for the session announced.

Any questions - drop me a line.

Dear Non-ship Group,

I hope I'm doing this right. I'm just going to suggest one story, since this is my first time out. Here it is:

Title:
"Snapshots: Willow (1/1)"

Author:

Northlight

Also, in my attempt to find a "non-shipper" story, I found one that seems well written. (I have yet to actually finish it, but hope it's OK to suggest it as a possible.)

http://archive.shriftweb.org/archive/9/purgatory.html

"Purgatory" by Michael T.

It's set post-season 2 after Buffy leaves Sunnydale, and shows both sides of her absence (i.e. her life and the life of the gang back in SunnyD).

Although it is a completed story (104 K), "Purgatory" is the first part of a series so I'm not sure whether it fits the criteria for a selection by the group.

These are the specs as entered by the Author at the Buffy Fanfiction Archive.

Title: Purgatory (104 K) (text-only format)
by Michael T. (e-mail)
Show: Buffy
Category: Action/Adventure, Alternate Universe, Drama, Series
Warnings: none
Characters: Angel, Cordelia, Devon, Giles, Harmony, Joyce, Larry, Snyder, Willow, Xander
Pairing: None
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Part 1 of the Trick Chronicles, an alternate senior year. Buffy has to cope with sending Angel to hell while her friends have to cope with her absence.

[> [> Review of PJzallday's Suggestion: "Purgatory" by Michael T. -- Gwynevere1, 19:47:32 02/18/03 Tue (dhcp0228.hrn.resnet.group.upenn.edu/165.123.185.122)

The Good:

In general, there was good characterization; all the characters held true to their own distinct voices. Especially, I always love a good Snyder. The dialogue was quippy and original. There was nothing confusing about the plotting. There were no *major* violations of canon. The action is realistic; no character had powers beyond his or her capabilities at that point. There are no blatant spelling or grammatical errors, except when the author is making the conscious decision to reflect the characters' way of speaking, e.g. how the writer explaining "Buffy Speak" in that Season 3 DVD featurette. Therefore, these are positive aspects of the writing, not negative.
Almost to my surprise, I found the background about Cooper's past truly affecting, and a nice parallel to Buffy's situation. Making bad choices. Seeking redemption. Isn't that what this show is all about?

The Bad:

There is a lot of post-"Becoming, Part II" fic out there, and this piece really suffers by comparison. There was a great deal of long, drawn out passages describing details that the reader, who is naturally a fan of the show, would already know. For instance, always describing the clothes and other aspects of the characters' appearance when they served no purpose to the overall story. Maybe for homeless Buffy it was necessary, but the reader knows how Old School Willow dressed. I, personally, prefer crisp, tight narratives. There were too many times when I found myself saying, "Alright, I get it. Do we have to chat about it all day?"
There were a few too many continuity errors, albeit minor ones, that just bothered me. Why would Cordelia have gone up to the Girls Formally Known As Cordettes by the beginning of Season 3, anyway? Her association with them ending "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered." Dingoes Ate My Baby should not have been considered good by the rest of the group. It was a running gag that the band was BAD. I don't think there is really AP Renaissance History (Does anyone know? I apologize if I'm wrong there). Also, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? Not even close. Doug Petrie's original draft of the intervention scene in "Revelations," maybe, but that? Willow would have known better.
There were no new insights into the characters. I also felt that the story came across as emotionally hollow.
In addition, it had way too many similarities with "Anne": the duel storyline; the activities in Sunnydale; the homeless shelter; the frightened, shy girl Buffy had to rescue; Buffy's choice of pseudonym. Although this story had no date that I saw, it had to have been written after "Anne" if we knew Buffy's middle name even was Anne and if we knew that Oz's full name was Daniel Osborne. I prefer stories that do not use existing episodes as a crutch.

Conclusion: I noticed that this was Part One in a series. Although the story didn't have me wishing I could sleep with my eyes open, I have no interest in reading the next parts. Basically, this was not a bad story, but I've read so much better.

Overall Score: 83

After I sent everyone in our group my review (which can be found above), I recieved the following message from PJzallday:

Subject: YIKES!!! Did I misunderstand how things are supposed to go???

Hi all Non-shipper Fic Folk.

Just received a review from one of the group members. I was rather under the impression we were still in the planning stages of this session.

I'm new to this, as I gather are most (if not all) of the rest of us. But in reading the procedure, I think we are to provide a list of stories (for the group to read over the next several weeks) to the Club Moderators. They then randomly select the story we read. THEN we review.

Isn't that it?

PJ

I responded to the entire non-ship group:

Dear Non-ship people,

OK, I'm the one who sent the review. I'm new too, so maybe I'm the one who misunderstood. What I thought we did was, each person in the groups selects a fic, and then all the other members of the group review it. After we all read and review, then we decide which piece from the ones suggested by our group we are going to submit to the entire Club. Then, the entire Club does the exact same procedure from amongst the pieces selected as Best In Group to finally decide upon the top two stories which receive the Club's award for that term. Somewhat like a dog show. Is that correct?

So, what the sitch?

[> [> Re: Moderators' Assistance Requested -- Leatrix, 14:28:22 02/19/03 Wed (AKCF1-GGI.xtra.co.nz/203.96.111.237)

To add to Morgain's message. Generally full reviews aren't done at this stage. As we have yet to decide on the stories to select from this session - it would be prudent to hold off posting reviews.

Lets get down to making sure we have the stories we wish to review sorted out and then discuss which ones we liked. If there are no other suggestions for non-ships, then let's limit ourselves to the two suggested?

Any other thoughts?

[> Well, usually we do the more formal review and rating -- morgain, 10:52:05 02/19/03 Wed (modemcable122.195-200-24.que.mc.videotron.ca/24.200.195.122)

as you have done for all of the groups' final recommendations.

This part is generally just reading the suggestions and saying things like: I liked it because.... I think it represents the ship well because.... I don't like this one because.... It is an initial selection process, and doesn't have to be so "rigorous" and detailed. That comes later.

Usually about 3 or 4 are read [sometimes more if its a big group like B/S.

However, if this is the story your group selects, your review for the whole group is done!

Sorry I haven't been as clear as I should be. If you have more quesions, just add to this thread...

1. Purgatory by Michael T
2. Snapshots: Willow (1/1)

They were both ok I just prefered the detail in Purgatory.

Out of the two, I thought 'Purgatory' by Michael T was the better choice.
