"Peace, miru-kale," Wesimbi murmured, walking beside the warrior. "You speak as though of deeds to come - are you not already doing all that you can to restore the bond? Peace." He glanced over at Gabriel, not expecting but half hoping to see the man's hair glimmer green in the soft light beneath the trees. But legend was not memory. With a philosophical sigh, he decided to bend legend to suit reality. Suddenly, the creature walking beside Gabriel was no longer a towering phoenix halfblood, but a man of normal height with hair of deep bronze tied behind his neck, and eyes of clear bright blue without white or pupil.
"Do please excuse me," he said, and though his voice retained its tone and clarity, it was somehow reduced, as though the transformation had taken away a dimension of its power. "If I must be land-bound for a time, I mask myself. My true feet were not meant for long travel across the earth."
Behind them, Kalea's mind was racing. She was too timid to ask questions of Gabriel for a time, and so fell, as ever before, to discussing the matter privately with her half-sister. ::Nashy,:: she said in the carefully guarded link, ::why do you suppose that Gwen is so weak? If the bond was intact until one summer ago, wouldn't she still retain the benefits of that? Does it wear off so quickly? And what happened to her mind - she said she'd never met Gabriel and the rest before she sought help for Jeff. Someone twisted the boy's mind, certainly, but how could they twist Gwen, and she still be so powerful? You'd think they'd have to break her entirely to make her forget...she's so strong.:: Kalea remembered, with admiration, the grace and might of the beautiful liren.
