Thorongil listened to the conversation between the one-horn and the Paw with curiosity that quickly turned to apprehension. They spoke of the necessity of dealings with some creature who appeared to be mad, a prospect which Thor did not find at all heartening. Madness was a thing greatly feared among the Many-Color, madness that caused a mother to kill her foal, a herd-father to turn on his runners, strong young warriors to stagger about with foam on their lips, gibbering nonsense. He shuddered a little before returning his attention to the suggestion put him by the Paw.

I would be glad of the help, he admitted. We will travel much more quickly with your aid. But please, lord, I would be grateful to know more of our destination. I would put the two-leg-Paw and the child of Men in no danger. They are kind and innocent of any offense.

Kalea sighed and tried not to wonder what the three creatures were discussing across the fire. Apparently, it was none of her business. Oh, Nashy, she thought with a kind of desperate melancholy. How I miss you!

She managed a smile and ruffled Dante's fine black hair. "Trebor is a fine cook, and I'm sure that if you're very good, he would let you ride on him. But you have to prove that you can be good, and wouldn't pull his fur or anything."

After a time Dante went to sleep in the grass, a deep restful sleep brought on by this long-awaited full stomach and sense of peaceful security. For a while Kalea sat over him, wishing she could hear the conversation of her three companions, but at last weariness overcame her and she lay down beside Dante and slept, surrounded by the sweet smell of the grass. She dreamt of fire in the sky and lightning on the ground, and running for her life toward a great black hole that rose up to swallow her, and heard a voice coming up behind that called her name, but it said Nashota instead.
