::What do you mean?:: Gwenneth asked sharply of Rio as the three loped along. ::...You haven't been there...have you?:: Her tone was every bit as eager curious as Alexis's, and her eyes were bright as she glanced at Rio. ::No, you can't possibly have been there...right?::

--

Jeffrey stood very still for a moment, still ankle-deep in the stream, feeling quite disconnected. His lips tingled slightly, and his mind was still reeling with the image of Alexis's moon-bright face so close to his, the swirl of her hair as she had turned away, laughing. It was a very strange thing, he decided, staring blankly forward. All of his life he had struggled to fit in with the children in the walled city, but no g.irl had ever given him a second glance. Yet the moment he had stepped outside the walls a beautiful, intelligent, sensitive, and kind young woman had immediately trusted and cared for him. A most extraordinary thing.

"Hey, lover boy, snap out of it before she gets herself lost."

Jeff blinked and came out of his reverie to see Angie's still-grimy face peering up at him with an impish smirk. Her brown eyes glittered, and she turned on her heel and skipped merrily after Alexis.

There was another odd thing, Jeff thought to himself as he frowned at his bare feet and walked carefully after his companions. Somewhere beneath Angie's filthy, overconfident exterior was a lovely young lady, but she refused to let that g.irl out. It seemed that Angie both cared for and hated him, wanted to be with them and far away at the same time. She was pure mystery, and Jeff was glad to have Alexis along to help him figure Angie out. His face relaxed into a sloppy grin as the pale g.irl again entered his mind.

--

Angie glanced around quickly. Seeing that Alexis was a fair distance ahead and the boy well behind, she climbed a tree. It wasn't the normal, cumbersome, weighty climb of a normal human, either; Angie climbed with great speed and agility, as though her slight weight was totally nonexistent and she could merely float up through the branches.

When she reached a satisfactory height, the g.irl focused on a nearby tree-- about fifteen feet from her perch-- and leapt. In an instant she was clinging to the second tree's trunk, and immediately located a third tree. She again gathered her legs beneath her and jumped with all of her might. Once again, she felt her weight drawing her inexorably to the ground far below, but she fastened her eyes on a branch of the next tree and concentrated on it as hard as she could. She blinked, and during that blink she felt the smooth bark of the tree connect with her hands. She looked around in satisfaction, and performed another impossible leap with the greatest of ease. She had no idea how or why she had acquired this talent, but she had discovered it purely on accident a few years ago and found it very useful in woodland or rocky areas.

At the moment, it was helping her catch up with Alexis.

Angie was a turmoil of emotions inside. Much as she hated to admit it, she was growing rather fond of Alexis, and the word friend had crept into her mind more than once that morning. As for Jeff, she had nothing against him; it was amusing to her to watch his attachment to Alexis grow.

Therein lay another problem for Angie-- she was chaining herself to these people with absolutely no hope of reward. When the boy finally accepted his identity he and Alexis would leave with their lir and liren, and Angie would be left standing alone, with no one, just like before. It irked her terribly to know that she could never be one of them, that there was no way to make a permanent friend of Alexis, because in the end they would leave. There would be no repayment for the time, energy, and emotion Angie had committed to giving, had already started giving.

In fact, the only way she would benefit from this situation would be by having someone to talk to on her travels. She wanted desperately to have another look at the dragon eyeries-- and perhaps another go at the dragon treasure-- and it would be less dangerous and more pleasurable to be accompanied.

She would have to break Jeff in, was all. Angie wanted to please Alexis ((much as she warned herself against this friendship that would betray her later)), and Alexis followed Jeff's direction. Therefore, if Angie wanted to get any serious work done, she would have to obtain the boy's permission.

Permission! she thought spitefully as she leapt through the trees. Mother help me, I'm chained! She paused for a moment in bitterness, until she caught sight of Alexis's pale hair through the leaves. Angie dropped silently to the ground and padded up beside her companion.

"Lexi?" she asked. The pale g.irl was standing completely still, staring with fearful curiousity at something ahead. "Alexis, what..." Angie trailed off and fell silent as she followed the other g.irl's gaze.
