She woke up groggy, and her mouth still hurt. Without opening her eyes, Angie wiggled her loose front tooth with her tongue, and with a flash of red pain felt it come away from the gum. With a snort of disgust, she sat up and spat out the tooth, wiping away the blood with the back of a hand, and only then realized where she was.
They were still in the cave, and it felt as though she had slept for a long time. Her limbs felt curiously heavy. Beside her was the Nobel gleaner, whom she had been using for a pillow, and in the dirt beside him were still scratched the three words that had given her enough comfort to sleep. The Silent Paw raised his head then and she realized, seeing the weariness in his eyes, that he had probably not slept but had made himself sentry and guardian over her while she slept. Before - in the world of free air where she was independent - this would have made her angry. But now, it just made her want to cry.
The shadows were still all around them, cold and still, but she felt little shivers of air over her skin and figured that they were talking together in a language that she, now powerless, could never hope to understand.
"What do you want?" she asked, and her voice seemed very loud in the long silence. "Why are we here?"
::Why should we tell Bana?::
"Stop calling me that," she said, and was ashamed to her her voice tremble slightly. Bane, she knew, meant star. "You should tell me because I'm sick and tired of waiting to die, that's why."
::Bana will not die - not with us. Bana is needed.::
"What for?" She clung to Nomis's fur in sudden apprehension, and was comforted by the brush of his whiskers on her arm.
There was a pause, and Angie thought that the shadows were consulting together. Then at last one spoke - not the one who had always spoken to her in the past, but a different one whose voice she did not recognize. But it sounded weirdly familiar.
::Father made the world with thought, and from his dreams run rivers of deep magic. The little people found this magic and used it to build the mountains, to split the world in two, but when the world split...we were born.::
The shadows flickered and gibbered and Angie drew her legs in closer to the warmth of Nomis.
::The wall has been breached, the divide is failing. The little ones have not yet realized the stakes that they are playing, but soon they will...and they will try to abolish the divide. The world cannot be sealed again, Bana, or we will be trapped and die.::
"How...how do you know that they want to bring the mountains down?" Angie was taking a stab at the shadow's meaning, hoping that she was following the strange talk.
The voice chuckled. ::You are very clever, Bana. Do you know, then, why we have disabled you?::
"So I can't fight back?" Defiance flashed in her eyes. "You took my powers, you cowards."
::Only in part. You are a wonder, Bana - you are something that the world has never seen before. And the world is very old indeed. We have taken nothing from you, we have merely...disabled you. And we are quite certain that in time, you will regenerate what you perceive as lost.::
Angie frowned. "Well, so what?"
::Do you know how the barrier was created?::
"The mountains? By...by thought? The Father's thought?"
::A noble guess, but incorrect. The barrier is the only thing that the Father did not create. It was not his intention to divide his world - this was the idea of the little ones. And it was created by the making of a sacrifice.::
"What kind of sacrifice?" Angie asked hesitantly, eager for more answers and trying to absorb everything she heard.
::A human boy, without magic. The sacrifice was made by betrayal, though borne with great pain, and it was these things that enabled the little dreamers to sing the barrier into existence. It is the type of sacrifice, you see, that determines what the dreamers sing.::
"The dreamers?"
::After the Father's own heart, these dreamers. And when they sing...mountains move.::
Something flickered in Angie's memory like a faraway lantern in a dark cavern. Had she heard that phrase before? "So what does that have to do with me?"
::The human boy was something new, for he came from somewhere different. You are something new and yet born of the Father's thought, just like us. If you are in place...with regenerated power...and at just the right moment...as the dreamers begin to sing...we release unto you what we have disabled....::
The shadows crooned together and the sound made Angie's skin crawl. Tears filled her eyes.
::You are the key, Bana. You will split the world and give us our freedom forever.::
