You get so attached to them, and it's so hard to say goodbye.

We're about to face the same thing with Barney, our old cat. He's got cancer, and he's having a lot of trouble keeping food down. We're starting to see his quality of life slipping. We don't want him to suffer, so we'll have to do what is really the most merciful thing. (I think our beloved pets count on us to do what is best for them, even when that is the hardest thing to do.)

I'm betting another little kitty finds his or her way into your life soon. And I agree with your opinion of people who are mean to animals. I think their punishment should be to receive exactly what they did to whatever poor animal had the misfortune to get in their way.
