Subject: Wow...I'm sure glad that's over...

We finally wrapped up the budget season at work, and with it the last legislative session for many months. (They probably won't come back until after Election Day, since both houses are up for election this year.) We stayed late on Friday, came in Saturday and Sunday, and then on Monday the 30th -- the last day before the new budget had to take effect, as mandated by the state constitution -- the session started late...and I do mean late. The Assembly convened around 11 p.m., and the Senate began voting even later. When they started, there was still no agreement on the budget as well as a number of bills that were supposed to raise revenue for the state. I think the Senate Budget Committee finally released them around 3 a.m., when the dealing was done.

Most of my staff stayed all night long. I left around 12:30 this a.m. so I could return with other staff members to open the office at 9. The Assembly recessed for awhile in the wee hours of the morning (rumor has it they took a break to sleep), and then kept going until 4:15 p.m. this afternoon. Some of my most seasoned staff -- guys who have been there 15, 18 years - said they'd never seen anything like it.

Unbelievable. But the legislators got everything done, and now it's over. I can enjoy my summer, and all the sunshine we're finally seeing. Hooray!
