Access Restrictions/Banning
[ Back to Help Desk ] [ Advanced: Regular-expression usage ]

Important: Crucial system performance issues forced us to make some changes. Bans on viewing can now only be placed on IP addresses (ie. 127.0.0.1) -- You cannot ban a hostname (ie. somecomputer.somewhere.com).

Hostnames may still be used in the "Posting Ban-list".

Forums may also be set to Moderated -- Please see the Message Management Help page.

VoyForums allows Forum Owners to restrict access to their Forum in order to prevent misuse. Currently this feature is accessable from the Advanced Configuration area.

In this area a Forum Owner may restrict access of either Reading of or Writing to their Forum. Hosts/IPs restricted from Writing may freely browse through the Forum and read messages, but may not post new messages nor reply to existing messages. Hosts/IPs restricted from Reading may neither browse/read messages nor post messages.

To ban a specific Host or IP simply enter them directly into the area you wish to ban them from, either Reading or Writing. To specify multiple Hosts or IPs simply enter them all in separated by Spaces or Enters. VoyForums currently limits the length of the entire area to 1024 characters; that is, 1024 for the Reading area and 1024 for the Writing area.

VoyForums decides that the Forum Owner wishes to ban a Host if the item entered contains any letters. Otherwise it is assumed it is an IP. This is important because VoyForums needs to know whether or not it is comparing the match to a user's Hostname or IP address.

For example, if a Forum Owner wishes to ban anyone coming from the host machine.somedomain.com, he could enter:

machine.somedomain.com
If one wished to ban from the above host as well as anyone from the IP 192.168.38.2 one would simply enter:
machine.somedomain.com 192.168.38.2
Wildcards:
Additionally, wildcards may be used to allow a simple "glob" match, like: *.somedomain.com or 192.168.*

Examples are available.

Furthermore, VoyForums supports the use of Regular Expressions, please read the Regular Expression documentation for details.
