My daughter is 3, did pageants from 12mo to 2 and then I pulled her out because of a bad experience. Now she has asked to do pageants and I have decided to "try again". My dauther is very pretty, outgoing, so I figured we would do ok if we started out at some pre-lims and worked on getting her wardrobe together for the time being. So we decide to do a "Swimwear/beachwear" prelim close to our home, (in the south) I contacted the director ask the appropriate questions about make and cloths (what was recommended/allowed) and it was explained to me that a OTR suit or custom was fine, no "best attire", judges would be judging fit and match with child. Make-up was allowed but explained that light make-up in her group would be recommended. So I purchased OTR swimwear and then embellished is with bows/flowers.....state level (I am crafty)Color of suit went great with her skin, fit was great. On the pageant day we arrived early, I had put my daughter's hair up (it is shoulderlenth and thick) I applied make-up, light foundation, powder, eye shadow (to compliment suit color) clush and tinted lip gloss. Her make was noticiable but appropriate. There were 5 girls in her group. All had 3 had swimsuits 2 had beach playwear. Only two were wearing make-up (mine included)All the girls were accompanied on stage by Mom except my daughter who goes by herself. She knows the T formation and does pretty feet and hands, turns ( a little too quickly) and also knows "knee pop". One little girl hid behind her mother the whole time, one cried, the other two walked to the X's with Mom in tow. I couldn't have ask my baby to do any better, for a 3 yr old she modeled great.
Crowning comes and my daughter recevied Queen in 0-3 age division......another got Grand 0-3.Let me explain further that the only score, only event was swimwear/beachwear, they did have a side event photogenic/portfolio but it did NOT count toward Grand. The little girl who rec Grand 0-3 wore a generic but cute playwear/tropical outfit, had a hairpiece, and had to be told where to go by Mom. I just don't get it. No matter how hard I try I never seem to get it just right. Most of the time I know where I went wrong, but this time it makes no sense. The little girl that beat my daughter was overweight, and never smiled on stage. Please understand, I don't expect my daughter to win every time, she will be beat many times, I do not want to sound as if I am bashing this child that won, I just don't get it. To make it worse, I rec my childs score sheets (3 judges) and she rec 10's in all catagories from all judges except for 2 9's....so the little girl that won had to have had just about perfect scores. My daughter has never scored that high, and now that she does, it is still no good enough for Grand? Judges wrote comments "beautiful child", "super modeling" "precious smile" "beautiful swimsuit". Where I am going wrong?

I know exactly how you feel. This happened to my daughter recently who is only 16 months. We had custom made stuff for a natural pageant, and since they wanted OTR stuff, we changed it to fit all the guidelines. They were judged on Beauty, Interview and Casual wear. In interview, my daughter shared, played with the other kids and was very outgoing. In beauty and casual wear, she did the best she has ever done and came out smiling, waving, blowing kisses, laughing the whole 9 yards. The little one who won smiled 1 time and didn't interact in interview. The one who won Beauty had on Rhinestones which was not supposed to be allowed, but was, and the one who won personality had NONE and had a custom made outfit on. It was really wierd. I am not saying my daughter should win everytime either, but I don't know what went wrong at this pageant. Needless to say, we won't be attending another pageant put on by this director because in no way, shape or form was it fair. I know what boat you are in. I say, try something else. Obviously that system isn't for you, and it sounds like your daughter should go on to bigger and better things. Congrats on her win though!!!

Ok but the problem is it keeps happening....at more than one system. My daughter always wins at least Queen or supremes her division but Grand keepd alluding us. Her cloths are right up there with the rest of them, her modeling is better than most at 3, her personality is great, but she keeps getting side stepped. I feel as if I am failing her, She is now with a coach who was at the last pageant (not coaching her at that time) and she herself does not know what went wrong. Opinion of the judges on that day....well it seems to be the opinion of judges everywhere that my daughter deserves to win but not win big....
