Subject: OT-paint odors...how to rid them

Help..I am having my house repainted and the smell of the paint is awful and despite windows being open and heaters running...chilly here...the smell is still there 2 days later! I have tried baking soda and vinegar both with no luck. Right now the smell is in the bathrooms and bedrooms. Someone told me vanilla but my painter is balking on it so any ideas or proof that vanilla works.
thanks, Cathy

Vanilla does work. However, I have never mixed it with water I always put it in small dessert bowls and sit 2 or 3 in the room we are painting. Either way try it. Hope it helps.

Cathy, we usually put a basin or bucket of water which will absorb the odours. I had never heard of vanilla or peppermint but I am sure it is worth giving it a try, it will probably sweeten the air and overpower the paint odour.
Safety Tip: Just be careful where you place the bucket. Maybe a basin placed on a firm surface may be safer.

Thanks everyone. The dish of vanilla is working well. The painter already had water in a bucket all day and it had doen little. Someone told me once that putting vanilla, a Tablespoon or so in a bucket of paint helps so may try and sneak some in a can when the painters are not around and see. Even my dogs and kitty did not like the small of the paint and hid out in the basement..Thanks to all of you for your suggestions...now to endure 2 more months of this possibly..lots of scraping and sanding and what not first in each room! I have used vanilla in my paint for years and years, even white, it won't change the color at all, I just dump some in and stir it up good, probably a tablespoon to each gallon. A way to get the paint smell out of a room that has been painted is to cut up an onion into quarters and put it in a bowl of water and let it set in the room overnight, I've used this and it works also. Good luck!

I've used the onion trick both for paint odors and contact cement fumes when we had laminate applied to our kitchen cupboards. I heard about it from a old professional painter. I'll try the vanilla when I paint next and maybe I can avoid needing the onion later.
