Vanilla does work. However, I have never mixed it with water I always put it in small dessert bowls and sit 2 or 3 in the room we are painting. Either way try it. Hope it helps.

Cathy, we usually put a basin or bucket of water which will absorb the odours. I had never heard of vanilla or peppermint but I am sure it is worth giving it a try, it will probably sweeten the air and overpower the paint odour.
Safety Tip: Just be careful where you place the bucket. Maybe a basin placed on a firm surface may be safer.
