Subject: Faux Cake
I recently posted a couple pics but I think they got lost in the issues with the board. So I figure I would try again. Hope my pics didnt crash the board LOL My youngest daughter recently married and being on a budget I spent 5 weeks without sleep making alot of the decorations myself. I think they turned out alright so thought I would share. These pics are of my faux cakes and some thought they were real and tried to cut into them LOL They are about the size of a desert plate. Let me know what ya think God bless DEBinOK

There were many different floral colors besides this one!

Those are beautiful; what did you use for the frosting? It certainly looks real!! Is that filling potpourri? I would love to have seen the wedding; bet it was ALL just beautiful!! TFS.

I used styrofoam discs bought at dollar tree. Then I took silk roses and cut them apart and hot glued them to look like frosting. I crushed my potpourri and tacky glued it to the middle. I think it will be easier next time to use my food processor to crush the potpourri. It turned out real well. Thanks DEBinOK

Ok I understand gluing the flowers on to look like frosting. But how did the "Wrinkles" get in the white to look like frosting? Wouldn't you have to put something on it to cover the styrofoam from showing? Or did I miss something??? Thanks

What did you put on for the icing? Material or real icing? Something had to cover the disc.

HHMM trying to think of how I could put together a tutorial to show how I did this. I guess I will have to take step by step pics. I took a two pack of styrofoam discs from dollar tree and tacky glued them together. First I used a hot knife to cut the slice out. Then I added the crushed potpourri with tacky glue. I am going to use a food processor next time to see if I can get it chopped finer. Then I did the sides in rose petals overlapping them to make it look more like frosting. I concentrate more on gluing down the top and bottom which allows the puckering to look more like frosting. Then I add the top rose petals the bigger ones to the top overlapping them on the sides just a bit again gluing down the tops and bottoms allowing them to pucker some. I come back to the top and use the thinner rose petals starting at the center to cover the center using about 6 petals gluing only the tops and bottoms. Then I take a bush of small flowers to decorate the edge, ribbon along the top of the side and lace along the bottom. I then decopage a paper doily to the candle plate and glue the cake down. I will work on putting together picture directions. They are fairly simple, not to expensive and the results are amazing. I used them to give away after the wedding and the comments were thrilling. Made my loss of sleep well worth it. LOL I did them in various colors and wish I could have got pics of the purple one it was my favorite. Thanks for the compliments ladies. Feel free to email me with any other questions I will do my best to answer it. God bless DEBinOK

Deb...that is absolutely amazing! Was that an original idea or had you seen something like that before? If that was original....my my my. No wonder you didn't sleep for so long, that took a lot of creativity. I think I can safely say we are all more than impressed! We'd love to have a step by step pictorial for this! If you'll tell us how much it cost to make, I'll send you a check and dance at your next wedding if you'll do it!! Wow. Amazing!

Re: Faux Cake -- DEBinOK, 23:07:58 05/10/08 Sat [1]
Thanks for the kind comments. This one was not one of my favorite colors but didnt get a pic of all of them. I made orange, green, yellow, purple (my fave), blue etc. Original idea? No I was visiting a friend in NC and she had a faux cake on her table. I was intrigued and thought it was great. It was a 9" cake and I took pics. So with pics in hand I sat and tried to come up with one myself. This was the result. Only I downsized it to about a %" or 6" cake. Cost was no more than 4 or 5 dollars using Dollar Tree supplies. I am now experimenting using a spice concoction instead of the potpourri LOL Thanks again God bless DEBinOK
PS It is a simple craft to do or I couldnt do it LOL

Re: Faux Cake -- DEBinOK, 23:14:55 05/10/08 Sat [1]
Annie a hot knife was just simply a serrated steak knife (which you can afford to use because it will never be the same again, in fact that is the soul purpose of this knife now, to make cakes LOL) that I heat up on the stove top over a flame and it cuts right through the styrofoam disc. It doesnt smell real good but that eventually fades LOL
Mary Jane my next wedding? Oh boy I just celebrated my 25th anniversary and the thought of ever doing this again not in this lifetime LOL Most days are diamonds but some are coal LOL But hey feel free to dance and write me a check HAHA God bless DEBinoK
