Subject: need a poem for a child that has passed

I need your help, i work with special need students who have a vision and hearing loss. Most of our students are profound and severe. A couple of weeks ago one of my favorite students passed away, we are still dealing with this. She was 17 and i had worked with her for 14 years and did respite in my home with her. Alyssa was not able to talked but said so much. Myself and my co-worker have been asked to do a page in her memory for our yearbook. I would love to add a poem to her page.We are going to buy a book to give to her family and i know they would love to read something. I hope i am making myself clear lol.Thank you so much.

I like this poem.
Patty

I'll Lend You A Child
by Edgar Guest
"I'll lend you for a little time a child of mine," He said.
For you to love - while he lives
And mourn for when he's dead.

It may be six or seven years
Or twenty-two or three,
But will you, till I call him back,
Take care or him for Me?

He'll bring his smiles to gladden you,
And should this stay be brief
You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise he will stay,
Since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there
I want this child to learn.

I've looked this world over
In search for teachers true,
And from the throngs that crowd
Life's lanes, I have selected you.

Now will you give him all your love,
Nor count the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to call to
Take him back again?"

I fancied that I heard then say,
"Dear Lord, Thy will be done,
For all the joy Thy child shall bring,

The risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness,
We'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known
Forever grateful stay.

But should the angels call for him
Much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that come
And try to understand."

I was going to respond to this one but when I read this Guest poem, I knew I simply had to say it is perfect. Edgar Guest is my inspiration and my favorite All-American poet and he says it all so very well.

I read this poem in our local newspaper years ago when we had several children and youth die of different reasons in our area. It was so perfect I thought.
I always think of it when I hear about a child of any age dying. I have included it in sympathy cards sent to parents, hoping to ease their pain, at least, a little.
Yes, Kelli, Mr. Guest said it very well.

What a beautiful poem. I wonder if it might be to long for the page, is there one that might be shorter. that one is wonderful.

I agree the poem is beautiful...but I have my own little special needs guy so I wanted to give this one a try. Hope there might be something here you can use. May God bless the "special" people who work with our "special" children.

We don't understand everything you went through
but we know that all the while
you never gave up and did your best
and shared your beautiful smile

And though it feels much to soon
for us to be apart
we will treasure every memory
that left your touch upon our heart

You had so much to teach us
our child of "special needs"
not speaking the words but saying so much
with your eyes and your smiles and your deeds.

Though we wonder why
its time to say goodbye
we know you finished your race
and celebrate in a happier place.

So we will journey on
and someday when it's our time to go
we know you'll be there to greet us
and we will hear you say
Hello.............

Thanks..I am glad the words touched you..I think when you walk the path the words can only come from your heart..that is one of the first lesson you learn from a special needs child. >^..^<

What beautiful poems! I wish I had these available to me when former students of mine had passed. My whole career has been with special needs kids and the sad fact is that we (along with their families) occasionally have to face their passing. Thanks especially, Sally, for all the thought you put into your poem. Blessings, Diana in CO
