I have used "Terro" with good results. It is a clear, thick, kinda sticky liquid that the ants take back to the nest & share it.....then they die.

My mother has had this problem and tried many remedies. Terro that Willow mentioned worked for her too. You can get it in hardware stores and possibly even Wal-Mart. Meanwhile, you might want to read this thread in archives:
