PERTH, Oct 4 AAP - Perth-based ERG Ltd has joined forces with United States company Northrop Grumman Information Technology to pursue transit opportunities in the United States.
-----------------------------------------------------------
As part of a teaming agreement, the two companies are currently bidding on a contract for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit
Authority (WMATA).
-----------------------------------------------------------
The project involves the establishment and operation of a smart card customer service centre and the clearing and settling of smart card transactions across transit agencies in the Northern Virginia, Maryland and Washington DC areas.
"The WMATA project will start a new era of integrated transit in the greater Washington DC area, allowing passengers to use a single smart card to pay fares across every major transit system in the region," ERG said in a statement.
------------------------------------------------------------
According to ERG, Northrop Grumman IT's parent company, US
defence contractor Northrop Grumman, is one of the largest private sector employers in Maryland and Virginia.
------------------------------------------------------------
ERG has previously been awarded smart card contracts in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Toronto, Singapore, Rome, Manchester, Gothenburg, Berlin and several cities in France.
------------------------------------------------------------
It is also the preferred contractor for projects in Seattle and Sydney.Chief executive Peter Fogarty said the teaming agreement for the transit market represents a tremendous opportunity for the company.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Northrop Grumman IT brings an excellent reputation for
integrity, strength and know-how in working on major complex government projects," he said.
------------------------------------------------------------
"Its deep understanding of smart card technology and how it can be used to improve security, as well as passenger convenience, will be important to our customers as we move ahead."Earlier this week, ERG secured a $30 million loan agreement with Babcock & Brown which will also advise the company on future funding.

Babcock & Brown Australian director Robert Topfer will join the ERG board.AAP
