Keycorp welcomes adoption of MULTOS by Australian government representative body
Sydney, Monday 1 November 1999

Australian smartcard and electronic commerce leader Keycorp Limited welcomes today's announcement that the Joint Steering Committee for the Smartcard Interoperability Project has selected MULTOS as
the standard platform for multiple application smartcards.

The decision opens the way for Australian government agencies to implement smartcard programmes using the world's leading multiple application smartcard operating system knowing that the same platform is being adopted widely across Australia.

Keycorp Managing Director John Wood said "This decision will give a tremendous boost to the adoption of smartcard technology in Australia, and confirms Keycorp's leading role in making smartcards a practical reality. As one of the founding members of the MULTOS consortium, Keycorp has developed the most advanced version of MULTOS available today, and has unrivalled expertise in the development of applications and solutions to run on the MULTOS platform." The ACT, Northern Territory, Tasmania, Queensland and Western Australia state and territory governments, Brisbane City Council and Centrelink all actively participated in the process of selecting MULTOS as the standard platform for multiple application smartcards.

The MULTOS operating system was developed with the highest possible security standards in mind to ensure the high levels of privacy and confidentiality that are essential for electronic commerce applications. Following is a copy of the media release from the ACT Chief Minister's office.

Smartcard platform selection
The Chief Minister Kate Carnell today announced that the Joint Steering Committee for the Smartcard Interoperability Project, chaired by the ACT Government, has selected MULTOS as the standard operating platform for multiple application smartcards. She said that "Smartcards will play an important role in facilitating secure transactions in the rapidly developing environment of electronic commerce."

Smartcard technology is designed to provide customers with an easy and safe access to a wide range of services. Mrs Carnell said that "The MULTOS system will provide the platform on which multiple applications can be developed by a range of providers to meet the specific needs of customers." The ACT Government has taken the initiative and invited all jurisdictions to participate in the process of selecting the standard. The ACT, Centrelink, NT, Tasmania, Queensland, Western Australia, Brisbane City Council all actively participated. With multiple jurisdictions adopting the same standard operating platform significant benefits will be realised through the creation of critical mass, joint venture projects, and cards that can operate throughout Australia.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The Chief Minister said "The benefits will multiply in accordance with the number of jurisdictions who adopt this platform. Governments, institutions, businesses, indeed any organisation using smartcards can, and should, adopt this standard which will create enormous benefits for all Australia." The Chief Minister said that "Industry leaders consider that the ACT initiative is one of the most important initiatives on smartcards taken by a government anywhere in the world and is unique in what it is seeking to achieve.
------------------------------------------------------------
The ACT Government is proud to have led this initiative and to set the standard operating platform for the new millennium." She said, "We wanted an open system which would let different organisations develop their own applications but share a card with others. This not only makes sense for the smartcard user, it also means getting cheaper and more comprehensive access to services."
------------------------------------------------------------
Today's announcement is an important step in the process of providing access to a range of electronically delivered services to the Canberra community. Mrs Carnell said that "Now we have identified a standard operating platform that meets our requirements we can get on with the business of developing smartcard applications knowing that now there is an environment that will allow jurisdictions to develop compatible applications. Over the next few months we will be identifying the first package of services to use smartcard and developing the tender specifications for their implementation".
