Ha una superficie di km quadrati 17.203 ed una popolazione di 5.140.000 abitanti. E' divisa in 5 province, i cui capoluoghi sono, oltre a Roma: Frosinone, Latina, Rieti e Viterbo. La storia antica del Lazio è connessa strettamente a quella di Roma. Prima della fondazione della Città e fino alla sua affermazione, avvenuta nel IV secolo a.C., la regione era abitata da Etruschi, da Latini (organizzati in una lega di città intorno ad Albalonga), da Ernici, Equi e Volsci.
