CEPSCO LLC LAUNCHES ‘CEPS PARTNERS’ GROUP’

New Industry Forum launched at CardTech 2001
Focus on increased dialogue and action as CEPS Partners encouraged to ‘get involved’

(Wednesday May 16 2001), CardTech, Las Vegas; CEPSCO LLC, the industry consortium established in 1999 to manage the on-going development and administration of the Common Electronic Purse Specifications (CEPS) has today launched its Partners’ Group - a new industry forum designed to help individuals and organisations in the development of CEPS as the world’s de facto e-purse standard.

The Partners’ Group has been formed following considerable discussion with the industry as well as from the results of a 400-strong survey undertaken earlier this year. The proposition is for a dynamic and independent body to:

Bring together individuals and organisations from across geographies and from across industries (for example, transport bodies from Asia, Europe’s payment specialists, U.S. chip-card manufacturers and Bankers as far afield as S.Africa and Australia).
Encourage action via business opportunity. For example, Partner benefits will include an online trade center through which Partners can post business tenders, review products and services and exchange requests for business opportunities.
Create the impetus for dialogue. Even non-Partners and other interested parties can register for a free monthly CEPS Partners’ e-letter, thus ensuring as wide a circulation as possible of CEPS-related activity updates and views (including pilots).

Speaking at the CEPSCO hosted Industry Roundtable at CardTech on 15th May, Hervé Kergoat, CEPSCO LLC Steering Committee Chairman and Head of Prepaid Products at Europay International, said; «This is the next step in the evolution of CEPSCO LLC. As the guardians and managers of CEPS we’ve matured into a six-strong body and put the standard on the map - the next stage is for our Partners to help us chart its future. The Partners’ Group will be the vehicle for this, as open and as forward-thinking a forum as possible through which Partners can work together, share ideas and experiences and most importantly - turn CEPS into a real business proposition. »

A number of potential Partners have already stepped forward, including Schlumberger and Giesecke & Devrient. Registration is on-line via the CEPSCO website - www.cepsco.com, where free subscription for the CEPS Partners’ e-letter is also available.

Notes to Editors

CEPS defines the requirements needed by an organisation to implement a globally interoperable electronic purse program. It requires compatibility with the EMV card to terminal communication protocol and application selection for chip cards and defines the card application, the card-to-terminal interface, the terminal application for point-of-sale and load transactions, data elements and recommended message formats for transaction processing. It also provides functional requirements for the various electronic purse scheme participants and uses public key cryptography for enhanced security. Currently, organisations from over 30 countries representing more than 90 percent of the world’s electronic purse cards have agreed to implement CEPS. In addition, over 200 organisations have signed license agreements for CEPS and have received the specifications. In October 1999, CEPSCO LLC was officially formed to manage the on-going development and administration of CEPS. Last July the original shareholders; CEPSCO Espaòola A.I.E., Euro Kartensysteme, Europay International and Visa International were joined by Groupement des Cartes Bancaires and Proton World.
CEPS is available to all interested parties. To protect the intellectual property rights, a licence agreement has to be signed to receive the specifications. Since CEPS is based on an open standardisation policy there is no licence fee or royalties. More information can be obtained from the CEPSCO website - www.cepsco.com
