The ProductBased on PROTON WORLD technology, the Europhone is the result of extensive engineering and styling by CPS Europe to create a low-cost, user friendly, highly functional design. It perfectly unites the core competencies of PROTON WORLD in implementing Proton technology and CPS skills in developing low-cost consumer devices. The Europhone features a 4-line, 40-character LCD screen with white LED back lighting and incorporates an ISO 7816-compatible smart card reader, a built-in modem and an alphanumeric keyboard. The user is guided through the built-in applications via the simple navigation and control of the unit's five function-specific keys and three screen-labeled soft-keys. The easy-access smart card reader supports value loading into the electronic purse of Proton smart cards which can then be used for on-line payment of various electronic commerce services or to provide authenticated access to home banking services. Available in three distinctive color schemes, the unit offers all the functions expected of a modern feature phone, including: Hands-free speakerphone operation, Mute, Flash, Last Number Redial, simple Voice Mail access and support of Caller ID* and Caller ID on Call Waiting* notification. The smart phone's 100-entry electronic directory supports name and street address as well as email address, fax and phone numbers. The 50-entry Call Log captures both incoming and outgoing calls and supports automatic name and number matching on incoming calls with Caller ID*. http://www.cardsetc.com/news/pressreleases/pr19990503.htmAmerican Express Licenses Smart Card Mutiple Application Framework to Leading Industry PlayersNew York, May 3, 1999- American Express today announced the licensing of its smart card multiple application framework to more than a dozen industry leaders. This represents a significant step toward promoting interoperability among a wide range of smart card applications, especially in the travel and entertainment industry. The multiple application framework is being licensed to: Cards Etc., Continental Airlines, De La Rue, Discover Card, Europay International, HTEC Ltd., IBM Corporation, MasterCard International, Microsoft Corp., Orga Card Systems, Proton World, Sun Microsystems and Tesa Entry Systems (a Williams company). In addition, Visa International has expressed its intent to license the multiple application framework. American Express also announced today the formation of the Interoperability Consortium, an independent and open body that will govern the multiple application framework standard. The American Express developed framework is well positioned to become the de facto standard, because of the diversity of the initial licensees and the strong support the licensees represent across multiple smart card platforms, including MULTOS, Java Card and Smart Card for Windows. In addition, the licensing agreement allows companies to easily extend their licenses to other customers, members, developers and suppliers. "We are pleased with the breadth of support the framework continues to gain," said Glenn Weiner, Vice President, Smart Card Technologies at American Express. "The licensing of our framework to other companies, including some of our competitors, demonstrates our steadfast commitment to achieving global and open interoperability for multiple application smart cards. It also shows our commitment to creating a stable environment in which companies can safely invest their time and resources to build innovative smart card solutions." "This is an important development in the smart card industry," said Duncan Brown, a smart card expert with analyst group, Ovum (http://www.ovum.com),, and lead author of Ovum's new report, Smart Card Systems: Multi-Application Technologies and Strategies. "Interoperability is the key to smart card adoption on a global scale. By opening its multi-application framework, American Express is demonstrating that interoperability should transcend competitive differences." American Express has used the multiple application framework in its smart card pilots with American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Hilton Hotels Corporation and IBM. In each of these pilots, corporate business travelers used their smart cards to speed through check-in points at airports and Hilton hotels. The smart cards also offered enhanced loyalty and rewards programs. The American Express smart card framework contains a detailed description of the data, files and structure of the multiple functions and applications contained on a smart card. The framework currently supports the following functionality: personal profile, corporate/government agency profile, airline, hotel, car rental, charge, credit and physical access. The multiple application framework builds on the global specifications put in place by EMV and incorporates relevant smart card standards, such as ISO and IATA.

The Interoperability Consortium will ensure an open process for proposing and considering changes to the framework, certify compliance, and promote the specification. One of the Consortium's first steps will be to create a set of common commands for multiple applications based on the framework. These commands will help ensure interoperability, allowing applications to work on any smart card platform, such as MULTOS, Java Card and Smart Card for Windows. American Express Company is a diversified worldwide travel, financial and network services company founded in 1850.
