Home banking:using a card reader, cardholders can access their bank accounts and perform transactions from a PC or smart telephone. Public transport:cardholders can buy e-tickets which are stored on the card and "spent" on each journey. Several of these applications can be combined on one card, to offer even more convenience, as is the case with university or company "campus cards" or local government "citizen's cards". Why choose Proton? It's fast- Payment transactions take less than a second, and load transactions usually take the few seconds a cash withdrawal would take. Market research shows that 91% of respondents find the Proton e-purse faster than cash. It is easy to use- Payment transactions from an e-purse just require the cardholder to check the total amount displayed on the terminal screen, and then to press the "OK" button: the transaction then takes less than a second. Cardholders can check the balance in their e-purse at any terminal by pressing the "?" enquiry button : the balance is displayed on the terminal screen. The card can be loaded at an ATM or a special load terminal or payphone or smart phone or pc-internet ...: in either case the cardholder uses a PIN, just like withdrawing cash from an ATM. Market research shows that 82% of respondents find Proton e-purses easier to use than cash. It is convenient- With an e-purse, cardholders no longer have to carry coins or look for the correct combination each time they make a payment. Market research shows that 86% of respondents think that "always having the correct change" was the main advantage of having a Proton card. Transactionsare secure, anonymous and auditable. The Proton technology was designed with the high security and auditability requirements of the banking sector in mind. Each element of a Proton-based system has its own in-built security features, which far exceed those of magnetic-stripe card systems, leading to greatly-reduced levels of fraud and increased cardholder confidence. The Proton technology will comply to the Common Electronic Purse Specifications (CEPS) and our licensees will have the opportunity to migrate from their existing systems to CEPS-compliant systems. CEPS is supported by the issuers of 90% of the world's e-purses, which means that, if all the supporters migrate to CEPS, cardholders could use their e-purses almost anywhere in the world where a similar scheme is in operation. Proton World is also implementing the EMV (Europay, MasterCard, Visa) international specifications for credit/debit cards. Proton World's open platform policy means that the card issuers have the freedom to choose the elements of the system, to suit their particular circumstances and requirements. Apart from in Belgium, Proton is not a payment brand, so issuers retain the freedom to brand their smart cards with whatever name or design they choose. Proton-based cards are already compatible with the euro. The first load and payment transactions in euros were performed in August 1998, without having to re-issue the cards. When CEPS is implemented by all the existing European card issuers, then e-purses will become internationally interoperable. http://www.itsecurity.com/tecsnews/aug2000/aug138.htmSCM Microsystems to Provide Giesecke & Devrient With World's Most Secure Home Terminals for Electronic Cash and Commerce ...Giesecke & Devrient is a leading supplier of banknotes and security documents, with more than 30 years' experience in secure electronic payment cards and systems. The Europhone, the first commercially released product as a result of this agreement, is an elegantly designed smart phone that offers a broad range of value-added and interactive services to the consumer over the telephone network. Key to these services is support of the Proton Electronic Purse and multi-applications technology that allows consumers to load value onto the card, use it for payment of electronic services and provide user authentication for secure home banking. This functionality, combined with enhanced communication services such as telephone directory search, electronic mail, fax and SMS messaging, provides the user with a broad range of communications and home cash pointfunctions in one convenient design. Fueling the MarketFollowing successful introduction of the Proton electronic purse in 15 countries, there are significant opportunities for international expansion and increased market penetration fueled by the availability of consumer devices that support value loading and electronic payments in the home environment. CPS Europe and PROTON WORLD acknowledge this fact completely and have established a technology partnership agreement in order to cooperate on the development of new consumer products that support Proton functionality in the home. The aim of this agreement is to develop a range of low cost consumer products that support Proton, including a simple home value-loading device, a computer peripheral, the Europhone smart phone and a full Web access / services terminal. The fusion of Proton's technological expertise with the consumer products design and marketing expertise of CPS will prove to be a winning combination." "Our primary focus is on producing highly integrated, low-cost consumer communication products" said Cor Pijnenburg, Company CEO and President of the company's parent Pijnenburg Management Group. "We aim to leverage our development expertise and knowledge of international telecom and broadcast standards to enable solutions that will allow consumers to fully benefit from the advantages that industry deregulation, the Internet and digital broadcasting will bring. Our cooperation with PROTON WORLD is seen as absolutely key to supporting this process."
