On average, 90% of blacks vote Democratic. When you look at that number, you realize there's something wrong. Here are the problems:
1. The Republicans
The Republican party is undeniably odious. It is supported by right-wing Christian fundamentalists (some of the same fundamentalists who hate blacks, gays, and pretty much anyone else they decide God doesn't like), and those fundamentalists, for their support, are given sway over conservative policy-making. If we Republicans ever hope to snatch the black votes from the jaws of the liberals, we must remove the shackles of the ideological far-right and boot their holy-butts out of the party.
But the problem doesn't end there. The Republican party is also filled with Southerners who have a disturbing, if not repellent affinity for the Confederates and the fight for "states' rights". (Which is baloney, since the Civil War was the result of nothing more than a bunch of rich, grumpy plantation owners who were unhappy about losing their slaves and so conscripted thousands of ordinary Joes to fight a stupid and treasonous war against the Northern Union.) This backward nostalgia reeps in a party that claims to be an advocate of individual rights and choice. Resentful Confederates and their southern supporters should be wrapped in the stars and bars and rolled out of party headquarters.
2. The Democrats and Black Leaders
Blacks follow the Democrats like sheep follow God (good analogy?). They cannot be separated from their masters. Why not? Because Democrats use scare tactics to convince blacks that the Republican party is comprised completely of stupid, white bigots (ever seen the NAACP ad in Texas, which blamed George Bush for the gruesome dragging death of a black man?).
Black leaders do their part by constantly reminding their community of the sins of racism, which reinforces the culture of victimhood. Now don't get me wrong, the black community suffered horrendously during slavery and segregation, and not that much time has passed since the age of Jim Crow. But, listening to Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, you would think that white racism is still the black community's largest problem. It isn't. High-school drop out rate, crime, drugs, illegitimacy, education, gigantic, unmanagable families, these are the real obstacles that bar blacks from advancing further in this country. But by focusing on racism, Jesse and Al keep keep their people angry, disgruntled, and most importantly, distracted (sounds like the Middle East).
Understandably, the Republicans have pretty much given up on blacks. Every effort we make to get their votes fails miserably. But if we were to conquer even 30% of the hearts of the black community, the Democrats would be dealt a serious blow.
In order to deal that serious blow, we must ignore the rhetoric of Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and adress the issues that matter. Like school vouchers, which a majority of blacks support; or private social security accounts, which enjoy the backing of 45% of the black population; or fixing the education problem, which might involve some privatization and would certainly get black people's attention; or scaling-down the nanny state, which is inadvertantly holding down black achievement. (You're either motivated to do something, or you're motivated not to do something - welfare is the motivation not to get a job.)
If the Republicans are to succeed, they're going to have to clean up among their own ranks and march forth into the slums of the inner-city with compassion, seriousness, and a good plan.
