In reply to: Matt 's message, "Affirmative action" on 20:30:01 01/29/03 Wed

I'm all for it.

In fact i think affirmative action should be expanded. you should also get 25 points added to your college entrance rating for being over 6 foot tall. I just dont think there are enough tall people in college these days. The only tall people i see in college are in sports. I dont think athletes give us a good idea of what all Tall people are like.

Wait a minute we cant forget about the short people too. Maybe anyone under 5 foot 3 should also be given extra points or preferences.

How about fat people. People just dont get the "well rounded" (every pun intended) experience unless they interact with people over 300 lbs. Maybe if you are over 300 pounds you should be given an extra 20 points. Fat people are discriminated against in our society too. Shouldn't we create an Afirmative Fation program as well.

Oh ya, and dumb people. There are not nearly enough dumb people in college. You surely cant experience a true cross section of people in college unless you get used to interacting with Dumb people. Actually, now that i think about it we might have the percentage of Dumb people in college covered.

Matt, I know you were hoping for a more serious response. Sorry, i didnt quite provide it.

Afirmative action only tries to fix discrimination by creating more discrimination. The problem comes up with how do we try to ensure that people are going to hire others based on their qualifications and abilities, not their skin color, religion, ext. We as a society are obviously not quite there yet, but we are making progress. The one nice thing is that those who dont hire/admit the best available are going to hurt themselves in the long run.

I would like to write more but dont have much time right now. I will try and write a more serious response to you later because this is a pretty important issue. There are good points and bad points to affirmative action.
