Subject: What did your opponent lie about?

Mr. Hennessy: What exactly did Mr. Collins lie about to the Charles County FOP? A specific answer would be helpful. Did he lie to the Maryland State FOP--He has their endorsement as well.

In response to the post from Laurie, Mr. Collins was an assistant state's attorney for many years before becoming state's attorney.

Mr. Collins lied to the FOP about my testimony before the House of Delagates regarding legislation mandating videotaping by the police. This was a piece of legislation important to the police. I was called as an expert witness by the proponent of the bill, Dana Dembrow. I am a former member of the D.C. Police homicide branch where we had been videotaping confessions since 1982. During my testimony I was specifically asked whether I supported legislation mandating the police videotape all confessions. I testified I did NOT support it. Mr. Collins told the FOP I did support it. What makes it worse is that Mr. Collins told them he testified against the bill and the bill was defeated. A clear inference his testimony was instrumental in the defeat of the bill. Again he misled the FOP as Mr. Dembrow was quoted in the Aug. 29 Washington Post article as withdrawing the proposed legislation as a result of my testimony.

I have no idea whether he lied to the State FOP or not. Maybe you could research that and get back to me. However, I did not lie or mislead the largest FOP in the area and one of the largest in the nation, FOP Lodge #1 when I got their endorsement.
