The thing about Weapons of Mass Distraction [sic] reminds me of an ancedote I read about Napoleon a few years ago. For those of you who don't know, Waterloo in 1815 wasn't Napoleon's first and last defeat; in 1812, he tried to march on Russia and eventually had his legions worn down during the Russian winter. He was then exiled to the island of Elba, but on March 1st 1815 he left it and landed in France. One particular Parisian newspaper reported that with the headline, "The Monster has Left its Lair." A few days later, it talked about Napoleon as "the evil animal" in reference to his conquering parts of France. However, as he got closer and closer to Paris, the headlines became progressively more pro-Napoleon, until, on March 21st, the same paper's special edition read "His Majesty the Emperor has Reached the Capital."

The same flip-flop happened with WMD, IMO. Thruout last fall and winter, we were bombarded with accounts of Saddam Hussein's arsenal of non-conventional weapons, and with horror stories regarding what he could do if he ever got the Bomb. However, as the war began, the Anglo-American forces stormed their way thru Iraq, and the moment of truth regarding the WMD drew nearer, Bush et al went on a tangent and shifted the focus of the war from disarmament to liberation. Now they say that "it wasn't about WMD" and all that crap that pretty much contradicts everything they said 4 months ago. The saddest thing here is that the people believe them...
